Tata Sons replaces Cyrus Mistry as Chairman 24/10/2016

Tata Sons on Monday announced that its Board has replaced Cyrus P Mistry as Chairman of Tata Sons. The decision was taken at a board meeting held in Mumbai. The Board has, meanwhile, named Ratan N Tata as Interim Chairman of Tata Sons, the company said in a statement. The Committee comprises Ratan N Tata, Venu Srinivasan, Amit Chandra, Ronen Sen and Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, as per the criteria in the Articles of Association of Tata Sons. The committee has been mandated to complete the selection process in four months. Cyrus Mistry was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons on December 28, 2012. “The Board in its collective wisdom and on the recommendation of the principal shareholders (Tata Trusts) decided that it may be appropriate to consider a change for the long-term interest of Tata Sons and the Tata Group,” said a Tata group spokesman. He said there was no change in CEOs at the operating level in the group. “Mr Ratan Tata will be interim chairman of the group for four months until the selection process gets done,” he added.

In an interview to Tata Group's in-house magazine in September, Mistry had stressed on the need to earn the trust of the group companies' chief executives. "When I assumed office as the group chairman, I was acutely aware of a few things. I knew I was not leading a single company, but was at the helm of a unique institution with a rich and glorious history," he had said. "I also recognised that to successfully lead the group, instead of relying on the position of chairman as the primary basis of my authority, I needed to earn the trust and respect of all our chief executives, the boards of directors and external stakeholders," he had said.
