When we board an aircraft and 'udan bharne ki taiyaari jab hoti hai', the air hostess performance a ritual that conveys 'air travel' related risk and steps to be taken to avert the same. The air hostess demonstrates steps to be taken in the event of :-
1) Breathing issues due to fall in Oxygen levels. Hence she explains how to operate oxygen masks.
2) Physical injury possibilities. Hence she explains how to tie seat belts.
3) Water landing in case of an emergency. Hence she explains how to use the safety jacket.
But despite this repeated reminder of potential danger, air travel happens to be the safest mode of travel.
But the ritual is also a reminder that 'risk' is omnipresent and widespread. Risk could be lurking both in a sandwich spread or for that matter in a portfolio spread.
One needs to see investment risk from this perspective. Can things go wrong and your investments fail?
Yes of course a 'black swan' event is certainly possible. People always believe that Swans can only be 'white' till one somewhere spotted a 'black' Swan. But a Black Swan is still an exception.
But then things can go wrong in your Sandwich too and blow away your life.
So 'exceptions' are always possible. But 'exceptions' are 'exceptions'. And 'exceptions' should be treated as 'exceptions' only.
When mutual fund investing reminds people to be careful of market risks, one should treat this reminder like the air hostess ritual.
Do we stop flying because of the 'disaster' that can occur mid-air. Isn't an air disaster a bigger risk. Isn't it a life threatening risk??
As they say, 'jaan hai toh jahan hai'. In mutual fund investing, even if disaster strikes in all likelihood you'll still be alive.
Then why does the word 'risk' send such a chill down our spine when it comes to 'investing'.
Perhaps because we are not educated well about 'risk'. Risk of investing is more to do with short to medium term volatility than loss of 'principle'.
In either case we are likely to be alive.
Remember when the air hostess does her jig, it does not mean imminent disaster. It is a reminder of an exceptional event.
The same is the case with 'investing'.
