There’s a common misconception — especially among those outside the industrial ecosystem — that a government subsidy is some kind of gift or political largesse.

It isn’t.

A subsidy is an 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. It’s a mechanism through which the State aligns private investment with public objectives — be it employment, self-reliance, or regional balance.

When, for example, an Entrepreneur sets up an ethanol distillery in a backward district, the risks are real — logistics, market uncertainty, power availability, and access to finance. A capital or interest subsidy simply 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤, enabling a project that otherwise wouldn’t materialise.

In that sense, a subsidy doesn’t distort the market — 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝.

Having worked with hundreds of industrial projects, I’ve seen that the most successful entrepreneurs are those who treat subsidies not as a bonus, but as part of their policy architecture. They build their numbers, compliance, and projections around it — not beyond it.

Subsidy is not a favour.
It is 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬.

As professionals, we’re trained to believe that control brings order — and order brings results.

But leadership has taught me something different. Beyond a point, control stops creating efficiency and starts creating anxiety — first in us, and then in our teams.

Over the years, I’ve realised that control is often a proxy for fear — fear that someone else won’t do it right, or that something may slip. Ironically, that fear itself reduces performance.

Real control is not about holding everything yourself. I̳t̳’̳s̳ ̳a̳b̳o̳u̳t̳ ̳c̳r̳e̳a̳t̳i̳n̳g̳ ̳s̳y̳s̳t̳e̳m̳s̳,̳ ̳p̳r̳o̳c̳e̳s̳s̳e̳s̳,̳ ̳a̳n̳d̳ ̳t̳r̳u̳s̳t̳ ̳s̳t̳r̳o̳n̳g̳ ̳e̳n̳o̳u̳g̳h̳ that things run right even when you’re not watching.

In consulting and industrial work, we often correct people. I’ve learnt to correct systems instead. People improve when the system allows them to.

Nobody loves Bihar as much. The occasional outbursts of anger and frustration of Prashant Kishor may be understood and sympathized with more easily if one loved the State even half as much.
