Albert Einstein could explain the universe — light, time, gravity, the very shape of reality.

But he could not solve the distance between himself and his son.

His younger son, Eduard, was sensitive, brilliant, and deeply gifted. He loved poetry, played Chopin beautifully, and dreamed of becoming a psychiatrist. Einstein adored him, calling him Tete.

But after Einstein’s marriage collapsed, he became more absent than present — a father in letters, not in life.

As Eduard grew older, he developed schizophrenia and spent much of his life in psychiatric care in Zurich. Einstein, by then world-famous and living in Princeton, sent money, wrote occasionally, and asked after him.

But he never saw him again.

Years later, among Einstein’s papers, archivists found a letter he had written to Eduard — and never sent.

In it, Einstein remembered hearing his son play Chopin as a boy, and wrote the line that said everything:

“I should have been there more. I was chasing ideas when I should have been chasing you.”

He never mailed it.

Eduard never read it.

He spent his final years in a clinic, keeping his father’s photograph by his bedside.

When Einstein died, Eduard was told the news. He sat quietly for a long time. Then he went to the common room and played Chopin.

It is a story about more than Einstein.

It is about the words we mean to say, the calls we delay, the letters we never send.

Sometimes the deepest regrets in life are not about what we did.
