At Red Fort, PM lauds India Inc, says wealth creation is a national service

In a message to India Inc., the Prime Minister said he was committed not only to improving the ease of doing business, but also to improving the ease of living. “Wealth creation is a great national service," Modi said. “The need of the hour is to recognize and encourage the wealth creators of our nation. They should receive more honour. If wealth is not created, wealth cannot be distributed. Further, if wealth is not distributed we cannot uplift the poor sections of our society."

Modi said the government was planning to invest ₹100 trillion on modern infrastructure, which in turn would generate employment. The government has also set ambitious plans, such as Sagarmala (ports) and Bharatmala (roads) to improve transport infrastructure. The total investment for the Bharatmala project was pegged at ₹10 trillion—the largest-ever outlay for a government road construction scheme.

Aspiration was a recurring motif in his speech. “Ordinary citizens are no longer satisfied with just a railway station. They will immediately ask, ‘When will Vande Bharat Express come to our area?’ Their thinking has changed," Modi said. By the 75th year of independence (2022), he said, farmers’ income should double, every poor person should get a pucca house, every family should get electricity connection and every village should have optical fibre network and broadband connectivity, besides the facility of long-distance education.

Amazon overtakes Google and Apple to become the world’s most valuable brand



Amazon has become the world’s most valuable brand this year by overtaking Google and Apple, according to a report. Last year, Google was ranked the top, followed by Apple and Amazon.

(1) Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Bitpoint has suspended its services after it discovered hackers have stolen about 3.5 billion yen (over ₹222 crore) in various digital currencies. About 2.5 billion yen (about ₹159 crore) of the missing currency was customer funds while the rest was owned by Remixpoint, which operates the exchange. Remixpoint said it would compensate customers for the losses

(2) A World Bank arbitration court has ordered the Pakistani government to pay damages of $5.8 billion to Tethyan Copper. The company discovered vast mineral wealth more than a decade ago in Pakistan's Reko Diq. Tethyan said it had invested more than $220 million by the time Pakistan, in 2011, refused to grant them the mining lease needed to keep operating.

Deutsche Bank Planning to Close Most Asia Equity Businesses



Deutsche Bank is planning to shutter the majority of its equities business in the Asia-Pacific region as part of a restructuring to be announced as soon as Sunday, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

The Frankfurt-based lender expects to stop offering trading of cash equities, equities research and may no longer underwrite initial public offerings in the region, the person said, asking not to be identified as the matter is private.

As many as half the Asia equities staff will leave initially and the remainder later this year, the person said, adding that the final decision depends on the bank’s supervisory board meeting on Sunday. The lender may keep its margin lending business, the person said.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that public sector banks will be provided with ₹70,000 crore additional capital to improve the availability of credit to the economy. Sitharaman said that bad loans have reduced by ₹1 lakh crore in the last one year. She added that ₹4 lakh crore of bad loans have been recovered over the last four years.
