EPFO WAGE CEILING HIKED FROM โน15,000 TO โน25,000 โ 51 LAKH MORE EMPLOYEES TO COME UNDER COVERAGE!
A major change has been approved for EPFO coverage.
The Union Cabinet has approved increasing the wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage from โน15,000 to โน25,000 per month.
The move is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees within the mandatory EPFO framework.
Why is this important?
At present, a fresh employee joining an EPF-covered establishment with wages above โน15,000 is generally not automatically brought under mandatory EPF coverage merely because the employee earns more than the existing ceiling.
With the ceiling moving to โน25,000, a much larger segment of employees earning between โน15,000 and โน25,000 could come within the statutory social-security framework.
And the impact is not limited to provident fund savings.
The expansion also affects the wider EPFO framework covering:
โข Provident Fund
โข Employeesโ Pension Scheme (EPS)
โข Employeesโ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI)
The wage ceiling had remained at โน15,000 since September 2014.
The Government estimates that the enhanced ceiling will involve additional annual budgetary support of around โน11,339 crore, with the incremental expenditure over five years estimated at โน56,695 crore, according to the Cabinet note shared in the source material.
For employers, this is not merely a headline.
HR and payroll teams will need to identify employees falling within the revised wage ceiling and review the impact on EPF/EPS/EDLI coverage and statutory contributions.
For employees, the change could mean wider access to retirement savings, pension and insurance-linked social security.
In simple words:
โน15,000 ceiling โ โน25,000 ceiling
And potentially 51 lakh+ additional employees brought into mandatory EPFO coverage.
A significant change for Indiaโs formal workforce.
