CLAIMING 80G? YOUR DONATION RECEIPT ISN'T THE WHOLE STORY.

You donated to a charity.

You have the receipt.

Done? Not quite.

For AY 2026-27, taxpayers claiming a deduction under Section 80G must provide additional information in the ITR, including:
Donee PAN
Donee name and address
Donation type
Amount
Transaction reference number
Bank IFSC, where applicable
Why does this matter?

A donation receipt sitting in your email or file does not necessarily mean you have everything required to complete the ITR correctly.

Especially if you made several donations during the year, finding transaction details later can become unnecessarily difficult.

Before filing:

RECEIPT → DONEE DETAILS → PAYMENT REFERENCE → ITR

Also remember that cash donations above ₹2,000 are not eligible for deduction under Section 80G.

Simple tip

If you're claiming 80G this year, collect the receipt + payment reference + donee details before you start your ITR.

Don't wait until filing day to reconstruct your donation records.

OWN TWO HOUSES? YOUR ITR MAY NOW BE SIMPLER.

“I own two houses, so I probably need a more complicated ITR.”

Not necessarily.

For AY 2026-27, ITR-1 allows eligible taxpayers to report income from up to two house properties. ITR-4 also permits income from up to two house properties.

That can be useful for taxpayers who:
Own their own home + another property
Have one self-occupied and one let-out property
Have two properties but otherwise fall within the conditions for ITR-1/ITR-4
But don't stop at the number of properties.

The other eligibility conditions of the ITR form still matter.

For example, ITR-1 is intended for eligible resident individuals with total income up to ₹50 lakh and specified sources of income.

Before choosing your ITR:
PROPERTY COUNT → INCOME SOURCES → TOTAL INCOME → ITR ELIGIBILITY

Don't choose an ITR form simply because someone told you, “You have two houses, so ITR-2 is compulsory.”

The correct form depends on your complete tax profile.

ZERO TAX ≠ ZERO ITR OBLIGATION

“My tax payable is ₹0, so why should I file an ITR?”

This is one of the most common tax misconceptions.

Your tax liability and your obligation to file a return are two different questions.

Your final tax may become ₹0 because of a rebate or eligible deductions, but that does not automatically mean that filing an ITR is optional.

The Income Tax Department itself highlighted this point in its 28 August 2026 taxpayer campaign: zero tax does not exempt filing where income exceeds the applicable basic exemption limit.

When should you stop and check?

You may have a filing obligation because of:

Income exceeding the basic exemption limit
Specified high-value transactions
Foreign assets / foreign income
Other statutory conditions

The current ITR forms themselves capture several of these additional filing triggers, including specified current-account deposits, foreign travel expenditure and electricity expenditure.

The important distinction:

TAX PAYABLE = ₹0

does not necessarily mean

ITR FILING = NOT REQUIRED

So before deciding to skip your ITR, check the filing requirement separately from the tax calculation.

₹0 tax can still come with a compliance obligation.

The actual filing requirement depends on your income and applicable statutory conditions.

Xero for Indian & Cross-Border Businesses

Xero is a great accounting platform.
But that doesn’t automatically make it the right platform for an Indian business.

This is where software selection often goes wrong.

Xero offers clean reporting, strong bank feeds and one of the richest app ecosystems in cloud accounting.

But when the business is deeply India-focused, GST compliance and local workflows can become an important part of the decision.

So where does Xero make particular sense?

→ Export-heavy businesses dealing with international customers
→ NRI-owned businesses with cross-border operations
→ Indian subsidiaries reporting to an overseas parent
→ Businesses where multi-currency reporting and international integrations are central to finance operations

And for NRI-owned businesses, there’s another question that often gets missed:

Do you really need one accounting platform for everything?

Sometimes the better architecture is a combination — a local system for India-specific compliance and Xero or MYOB for the overseas entity.

But there’s a catch.

Two systems mean two sets of books, and without a properly designed reconciliation process, that can quickly become a finance headache.

My view as an accounting practitioner:

Xero is a global platform with support for Indian businesses — not an India-first platform that happens to operate globally.

That distinction matters.

The right accounting software isn't about choosing the “best” platform.

It’s about choosing the right system architecture for how your business actually operates.

If your business operates across India and overseas, the software decision deserves more thought than simply asking, “Which accounting software should we use?”

FOUND AN OLD TAX MISTAKE? DON’T ASSUME IT’S TOO LATE.

Many taxpayers discover a mistake in an old ITR only after checking their records again.

Maybe you missed:
Interest income
Capital gains
Business/professional income
Another taxable income item

The first reaction is often:
“That return is already filed. Nothing can be done now.”

That may not be correct.

The Income Tax Department has made Updated Return (ITR-U) utilities available for AY 2022-23, as per the Finance Act, 2026.

But there is an important catch:

ITR-U is not simply a second chance to rewrite your return.

Eligibility conditions apply, and an updated return can involve additional tax. It also cannot be used to reduce the tax liability or increase the refund.

So what should you do if you discover an old mistake?

DON'T IGNORE IT.

Identify what was missed.
Check whether an updated return is legally available.
Calculate the additional tax and consequences.
Correct the return where permitted.
Keep the supporting documentation.

An old mistake does not automatically mean a tax notice is inevitable.

But ignoring a known mistake can make the situation harder to deal with later.

Found something you may have missed in an earlier ITR? Review it before waiting for the department to find it.

The availability and treatment of an updated return depends on the facts, relevant year and statutory conditions.

NIL GST DEMAND? YOU MAY STILL HAVE A RIGHT TO APPEAL.

ZERO OUTSTANDING ≠ ZERO DISPUTE.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION
“NIL demand means there is nothing left to appeal.”

CURRENT FACT
GSTN issued Advisory No. 671 dated 7 September 2026 addressing cases where:
Payment had already been made
The underlying liability remained disputed
The demand order reflected NIL / ZERO demand

The earlier portal restriction preventing filing of Form GST APL-01 in such cases has been removed.

PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCE
A taxpayer could previously have a substantive dispute but face a portal-level filing barrier.

That barrier has now been addressed.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
✔ Review NIL/Zero demand orders
✔ Check whether liability remains disputed
✔ Review payment records
✔ Check limitation period
✔ Prepare APL-01 where applicable

Section 107 provides the statutory framework for appeals and prescribes the normal three-month period, subject to the further condonable period specified in the provision.

If a GST demand order shows NIL/Zero because payment was already made, but the underlying liability is still disputed, the portal position has now changed.

TDS/TCS CORRECTION STATEMENTS ARE NOW ENABLED.

TDS/TCS correction functionality for Tax Year 2026-27 is now enabled on the e-Filing system.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION
“Once the original TDS/TCS statement is filed, an error can wait until the taxpayer raises a problem.”

CURRENT FACT
The Income Tax Department's current portal confirms that filing of TDS/TCS correction statements for Tax Year 2026-27 has been enabled.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
An error in the source statement can affect the deductee/collector's:
Tax credit
Refund
Demand
AIS / Form 26AS reconciliation
PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCE

A small reporting error can become:

Deductor error → Tax-credit mismatch → Taxpayer follow-up

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
✔ Review reported data
✔ Check PAN
✔ Check amounts
✔ Check relevant period
✔ Correct errors promptly
✔ Monitor updated credit

Correct the source data — don't leave the mismatch for the taxpayer to explain.

FADS 2026: FORM 1 IS NOW LIVE.

FADS 2026 is now live.

Don't start by opening Form 1.

Start with an asset-by-asset eligibility review.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION
“A small foreign asset can simply be ignored.”

CURRENT FACT
The Income Tax Department has enabled the Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers Disclosure Scheme, 2026.

Form 1 is available on the e-Filing portal.

The scheme provides a one-time compliance opportunity for eligible taxpayers to voluntarily disclose specified foreign assets and foreign income that were not previously reported.

The declaration deadline is: 31 December 2026

The important question is not simply:
“Do I have a foreign asset?”

It is:
“Does my asset/income fall within the scheme and its conditions?”

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
✔ Identify foreign assets
✔ Check foreign income
✔ Review previous disclosure
✔ Check eligibility
✔ Prepare valuation/source documents
✔ Assess Form 1

⚠️ TWO INCOME-TAX ACTS. ONE TAX PORTAL.

This is one of the easiest places to make a mistake in the
current transition.

Remember:
AY 2026-27
➡️ Income-tax Act, 1961

Tax Year 2026-27
➡️ Income-tax Act, 2025

Why does this matter?
The new Act did not simply erase everything relating to earlier years.

Both frameworks currently operate in parallel.

Especially important when:
Paying tax
Making advance-tax payments
Responding to old-year proceedings
Filing forms
Handling demands or appeals

What should you do?
✔ Identify the relevant tax year
✔ Select the correct Act
✔ Check the e-Filing portal guidance
✔ Keep payment/challan records

Bottom line:
Don't choose the Income-tax Act by habit.

Choose it based on the tax period involved.

As a Certified Zoho Books Advisor, I've seen this repeatedly with Indian businesses.

The problem usually isn't the software.

It's that businesses implement the accounting system — but never redesign the way finance works around it.

Think about what can happen inside Zoho Books:
🔹 Overdue invoices? Automated reminders can follow up with customers without your team sending emails manually.
🔹 Customers asking for invoice copies or payment status? A client portal can reduce that back-and-forth.
🔹 Service business billing by time? Project tracking can connect hours, budgets and billing.
🔹 Repeat billing every month? Recurring invoices can eliminate repetitive data entry.
🔹 GST compliance? E-invoicing and GST-related workflows can be integrated into the accounting process instead of being handled as a separate exercise.
🔹 International clients? Multi-currency capabilities can make foreign-currency transactions and reporting much easier to manage.

And here's what surprises me most:
Many businesses still maintain Excel trackers, manually chase receivables, prepare reports outside the accounting system and repeatedly enter the same information — while their accounting software can automate much of it.

So the question isn't:
“Are you using Zoho Books?”

It's:
“How much of Zoho Books are you actually using?”

The real ROI from accounting software doesn't come from buying the right platform.

It comes from building the right processes around it.
