Advance tax is a payment schedule, not a penalty.
If your total tax liability for the year exceeds the prescribed threshold after accounting for TDS deductions, the balance must be paid in instalments throughout the year. The four due dates are June 15, September 15, December 15, and March 15.
Businesses that defer everything to March face two compounding problems. Interest runs from each instalment due date -- not from the filing date. And the cash requirement arrives compressed into a single month, creating working capital pressure most businesses have not budgeted for.
The September instalment is the one most commonly missed. It is also where the gap between what has been paid and what is owed tends to be largest.

A question for those who prepare or sit through board reporting sessions.
Which of these is the most common gap you have seen in financial reporting to boards?
A. Numbers presented without variance explanation or business context
B. Cash position understated or reported inconsistently
C. KPIs tracked that do not reflect how the business actually performs
D. Reports arrive too late to inform the decisions being discussed
Comment A, B, C, or D below. Useful to understand where the gaps are most common across businesses.

Freedom was not given. It was built - through conviction, sacrifice, and an unwillingness to accept anything less than what was right.
Seventy-nine years later, what we build with that freedom - our businesses, our institutions, our financial systems - is a continuation of the same work.
Happy Independence Day from the entire team at Abhijith Preman and Co. LLP.

Not every financial discrepancy is visible in a standard audit.
Forensic accounting examines transactions for intent, traces fund flows across entities and periods, and produces findings structured for legal or regulatory use. It is applied when something does not reconcile and the business needs to know precisely what happened -- and who was responsible.
Common triggers: cash shortfalls that routine reconciliations do not explain, vendor payments without matching delivery records, related-party transactions with no clear commercial rationale, and inventory write-offs that follow a pattern.
A forensic review initiated early -- before a dispute escalates -- consistently costs less than one initiated after the fact. The evidence is cleaner, the timeline is intact, and the findings are actionable.

The income tax return deadline for individuals and most professionals falls at the end of July.
For companies and tax audit cases, the window extends to October. That extension is not an invitation to wait.
Filing late carries consequences that go beyond the penalty. If your business has incurred losses in the current year, a late return means those losses cannot be carried forward to offset future income. That restriction compounds quietly -- the financial impact shows up years after the missed deadline.
Clean, timely filing is not about avoiding interest alone. It is about protecting decisions your business has not yet made.
