The GST portal just launched Multi-State Registration, a new feature letting businesses register across multiple states or union territories through a single common profile.

The catch: accuracy matters more than ever here. Any incorrect detail entered at the Master TRN stage gets carried into every state-specific TRN it generates, so a single error can ripple across multiple registrations at once.

If you operate in more than one state and have been dreading separate registration applications for each, this update is built exactly for you. Just make sure everything is complete, accurate and correct before you submit.

Filing under a tax audit this year? Your ITR deadline just moved.

For AY 2026-27, CBDT has extended the due date for furnishing the Return of Income for persons covered under the applicable audit category of Explanation 2 to Section 139(1).

31 October 2026 → 21 November 2026

That’s 21 additional days for specified audit-case taxpayers to file their returns.

Note: This is not a general extension for all ITR filers. It applies specifically to persons covered under the audit provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

If you’re unsure whether this extension applies to your filing category, it’s worth checking before you assume either deadline applies to you.

The tax audit report deadline just got 21 more days.

CBDT has extended the Tax Audit Report due date for AY 2026-27.

Earlier due date: 30 September 2026
Extended due date: 21 October 2026

The extension applies to persons covered by the relevant audit provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, and comes after representations citing delayed ITR utilities, portal issues, DSC problems, and heavier reconciliation work this filing season.

With the audit report deadline now at 21 October, the corresponding ITR due date for audit cases has also moved to 21 November 2026, so both timelines shift together.

Still finalising your tax audit? Use this extra time wisely, not as a reason to delay further.

Have foreign assets or income that didn’t make it to your ITR? The window to fix this closes 31 December 2026.

The Income Tax Department has alerted taxpayers with unreported foreign assets or income about the Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers – Disclosure Scheme, 2026 (FAST-DS), a one-time voluntary window to declare what wasn’t disclosed earlier.

Here’s what it covers:

Foreign bank accounts
Shares held overseas
Immovable property abroad
Other overseas financial interests

Declaration deadline: 31 December 2026.

This is relevant if you’re a returning NRI, a former non-resident who still holds assets abroad, a technology employee with overseas stock or accounts, or anyone who simply missed reporting a foreign holding in Schedule FA of their return.

The smartest first step: check your Foreign Assets information in AIS and see if the scheme applies to you, before the department’s verification drives catch it first.

Not sure if you have foreign assets that need disclosure, or how FAST-DS applies to your situation?

Planning to visit a bank branch between 28 and 30 September? You may want to plan around it.

The Finance Ministry has urged public sector bank employees to call off their proposed three-day strike, saying most of their concerns have already been addressed. The Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, one of the two main demands, has been kept in abeyance after discussions with the unions. The remaining demand, a five-day banking week, is still under examination.

Here's why timing matters:

1. The proposed strike falls on 28 to 30 September, right before a bank holiday weekend.
2. This period coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks, a critical window for reconciliation, provisioning, treasury and market operations.
3. If the strike goes ahead, branch services could effectively be disrupted for five days straight.
4. Digital banking may continue to function, but branch-dependent activities like cheque clearing, cash deposits and in-person KYC could be affected.

For businesses relying on cheque clearances, large fund transfers, or physical banking during this window, it's worth planning transactions in advance rather than waiting until the last week of September.

Get it done before the 27th.

Getting a signature error on the GST portal? This might be why.

GSTN has released emSigner v3.3 to stay compatible with the new DSC USB tokens. Here's what it means for you:

1. Got a new DSC token issued on or after 21 September 2026? emSigner v3.3 is required.
2. Existing DSC working fine? No immediate upgrade needed.
3. Existing FIPS 140-2 DSCs can continue till expiry, no change there either.
4. Facing signing or detection issues on the portal? That's your cue to upgrade to v3.3.

So this isn't a mandatory update for everyone, just for anyone getting a new token or already running into DSC issues on the GST portal.

Big news for over 51 lakh Indian employees, effective from yesterday.

The Union Cabinet has raised the EPF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective 17 September 2026. It’s the first revision in 12 years, and it changes who qualifies for mandatory EPF coverage.

Here’s what this means:

1. Employees earning ₹15,001 to ₹25,000/month now fall under mandatory EPF, EPS and EDLI coverage.
2. The 12% employee and 12% employer contribution structure stays unchanged, only the wage ceiling moves.
3. Affected employees will see a modest dip in take-home pay, but a meaningfully larger retirement corpus and pension over time.
4. Employers now bear higher statutory contribution costs across a wider band of employees

For employers, this isn’t just a payroll adjustment. It reshapes retention strategy too. A more formal, better-protected workforce tends to mean lower attrition and steadier productivity in the long run, but it also means payroll structuring and CTC breakups need a fresh look before the gazette notification and EPFO circular formalise the finer details.

If you’re an employer, HR lead, or finalising your team’s compensation structure, this is worth reviewing now rather than after the next payroll cycle.

𝗨𝗣𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

From 15 October 2026, a new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) will apply to specified UPI person-to-merchant transactions above ₹2,000.

So, what does this mean for businesses?

𝗠𝗗𝗥 𝗼𝗳 𝟬.𝟰%:
Specified merchant transactions above ₹2,000 will attract an MDR of 0.4%, with a maximum cap of ₹300 per transaction.

𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 ₹𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬:
These will continue to remain free of MDR.

𝗣𝟮𝗣 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
Person-to-person UPI transactions will remain completely free, irrespective of the amount.

𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀:
Eligible small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh per month through UPI QR codes will continue under the zero-MDR framework.

Certain essential sectors such as railways, telecommunications, insurance, fuel and agricultural inputs will have a flat ₹5 MDR on transactions above ₹2,000. Capital market transactions will have a separate 0.02% rate, subject to a ₹300 cap.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀?
For businesses accepting large-value UPI payments, this changes the cost of receiving digital payments.

It may affect:

𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀:
Businesses may need to account for MDR as part of their transaction costs.

𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄:
Higher-value digital collections may have a small impact on net settlement amounts.

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
Businesses will need to properly track payment charges and reconcile them with their UPI collections.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲:
Businesses should understand how the new charges interact with their accounting and GST records.

The government has also clarified that MDR is a charge within the payment ecosystem and not a tax collected by the Government or NPCI.

With UPI becoming an increasingly important payment channel for Indian businesses, even small changes in payment infrastructure can have an impact on how businesses manage their collections and finances.
