Asia-US East Coast freight rates just hit their highest point of 2026 β Shanghai to New York is up 10% in a single week to $8,706 per container, and Shanghai to LA jumped 6% to $6,244.
Normally peak season would be cooling off by now. It isn't. And this week, Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said it himself, live on Bloomberg: freight rates will continue to be volatile, and disruptions will be MORE prevalent in the future β not less.
In this video, we break down:

Maersk Just Raised Its Guidance Twice in Six Weeks. EBIT Nearly Doubled.
A.P. Moller-Maersk beat Q2 profit forecasts and raised full-year guidance for the second time in under three months.
EBIT nearly doubled β from $845 million to $1.6 billion, year-on-year. EBITDA guidance raised to $10.5β12.5 billion, up from $8β10 billion. Ocean segment EBIT jumped from $229 million to $935 million.
The reason? Elevated freight rates, tight capacity, port congestion, and continued strength in Chinese exports.
When the world's second-largest carrier raises guidance twice in six weeks β that's not caution. That's confidence in where the market is heading.
For container owners β the fundamentals just got a public stamp of approval. π¦π’π

Up 136% From Last Year. That's Not a Typo.
The Containerized Freight Index closed at 3,409 points this week β up over 11% in a single month, and up 135.95% compared to the same time last year.
136% year-on-year.
Last year at this time, the market was talking about overcapacity. This year, the index has more than doubled.
For container owners β this isn't a spike anymore. It's a completely different market than the one everyone was planning for. π¦π’π

"This Is Not a Pull-Forward. It Is Real Underlying Demand."
That's Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc, on the company's earnings call this week.
Asia to US East Coast rates just hit their 2026 peak β Shanghai to New York up 10% to $8,706 per container. Shanghai to Los Angeles up 6% to $6,244.
Current weekly volumes out of Asia are actually surpassing the 6.2% growth the industry saw in Q2. Clerc says it's not temporary front-loading β it's genuine demand growth.
"This resilience is taking most observers by surprise," said Judah Levine, head of research at Freightos.
For container owners β when the CEO of the world's second-largest carrier says demand is real, not a spike, that's the kind of signal worth paying attention to. π¦π’π

"It's a New Baseline." Not Our Words β The Loadstar's.
2026 marks the third consecutive year that peak season has arrived early β and this time, industry analysts are calling it more than a temporary spike.
Early bookings, tariff-driven front-loading, and sustained demand are converging to create what The Loadstar describes as a Q4 mini-peak forming on top of an already-elevated market. Pre-pandemic, rates would climb through July, August, September, and taper by October. This year's pattern is different β elevated levels are holding, not just spiking and falling.
When analysts start calling elevated rates "the new baseline" instead of "the current spike" β that's a signal worth paying attention to.
For container owners β a new baseline doesn't reset. It compounds. π¦π’π

China Imports Up 27.4%. That's Not a Disruption Story. That's a Demand Story.
June containerized imports from China rose 27.4% year-over-year. Total US container imports hit 2.40 million TEU β up 8.2% from June 2025.
Far East to US West Coast rates rose 7% in a single week β and were 91% higher than a year earlier.
The Hormuz crisis explains part of the rate story. It doesn't explain this. Real cargo, real orders, real growth β arriving faster than anyone predicted for mid-2026.
For container owners β genuine demand growth is the kind of tailwind that doesn't disappear when a ceasefire is signed. π¦π’π

The National Retail Federation just projected July 2026 US container imports at 2.47 million TEU β an all-time record.
Importers are front-loading ahead of an expected August tariff jump. Meanwhile, CMA CGM's $4,000 peak season surcharge kicked in July 10th. HMM added another $3,000 five days later. West Coast rates already past $7,000. East Coast past $8,600.
Carriers are also blanking six to eight transpacific sailings a week β deliberately keeping capacity tight even as demand shows early signs of topping out.
Record volume. Stacked surcharges. Controlled capacity. All three, at the same time.
For container owners β a record-breaking month is exactly the kind of month that pays. π¦π’π

10.9% of the World's Container Fleet Is Stuck in Traffic. Literally.
Not at sea. Not in transit. Stuck in port queues.
10.9% of the entire global container fleet is currently tied up in congestion β the highest disruption level since 2022. Rotterdam and Antwerp are overwhelmed by vessel bunching. Hamburg is facing major rail delays and terminal blockages.
Front-loading from importers has completely exhausted booking space through early July, preventing any natural market correction.
When over 1 in 10 ships are stuck in queues instead of moving cargo β the boxes that are available become that much more valuable.
For container owners β congestion is doing exactly what scarcity always does to rates. π¦π’π

Rates Just Passed $7,900. And It's Not Even About Hormuz Anymore.
Container rates from Asia to the US East Coast just crossed $7,900 per FEU. Asia to West Coast up 8% to $6,175.
Here's what's interesting β market attention is shifting away from the Strait of Hormuz. This surge is now being driven by robust peak season demand and genuine supply-and-demand tightening, not just geopolitical fear.
That matters. Fear-driven spikes fade when the crisis fades. Demand-driven spikes don't.
For container owners β the market just found a second engine. π¦π’π

Q2 2026 returns came in at 7.27%.
That brings year-to-date returns to 14.69%.

While freight rates are surging 276% above pre-crisis levels, ships are being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, and global supply chains are being redrawn β your containers kept earning. Quietly. Consistently. Every single month.
