What counts as a grant? A simple guide for charities

Grants can sometimes be confusing - particularly when it comes to understanding the difference between grants, contracts, funding and bursaries.

Our blog takes a simple look at what counts as a grant, covering both grants received and grants paid out, and why getting the classification right matters for your charity’s accounts and reporting.

If you work for a charity or not-for-profit organisation, this could be a useful one to bookmark! 👇

Restricted funds used for unrestricted operations? Here’s why it matters.

Using restricted funds for purposes other than those specified by the donor can be a breach of trust and charity law.

Trustees should:

- Restore or repay the funds promptly
- Investigate what happened
- Strengthen financial controls and fund tracking
- Consider whether a serious incident report is required

The Charity Commission expects trustees to properly distinguish and monitor restricted and unrestricted funds.

Bottom line: Act quickly, document what went wrong, and put controls in place to prevent it happening again.

Remember A Charity Week | 7–13 September 2026

This September is focusing on the difference that gifts in Wills can make to charities and the causes.

Gifts in Wills are vital to so many charities, helping them continue their work and make a difference for future generations. Every gift, large or small, can help a cause you care about live on.

If you’re thinking about making or updating your Will, why not take a moment to consider a charity that means something to you?

This August marked a very special milestone for me. It has been 25 years since I became an ACCA qualified accountant!

When I look back over the last 25 years, I feel incredibly proud of the journey. There have been plenty of challenges, lots of learning, countless deadlines (far too many! 😂), and many changes in the world of accountancy. Countless networking meetings, friendships made and still in contact throughout all those years.

I couldn’t have imagined back then where qualifying would take me, or how much I would learn along the way - both professionally and personally. And who knows where the next chapter of the journey will lead!

So today, I’m taking a moment to celebrate 25 years of being a proud qualified member, and perhaps just a little bit amazed that all those years have passed!
