As we wrap up another week, it's important to reflect on the small wins we've achieved together in our financial journeys – whether it's successfully planning for a holiday, managing school fees, or navigating financial changes. Celebrating these moments helps keep us motivated and focused on our goals. What's one small achievement you're proud of this week? 🌟

Investors saw a perfect storm this week across financial markets. This culminated in US 10-year Treasury yields reaching 5.1%, a level last seen during the global financial crisis in 2007. The 30-year Treasury yield rose even further, exceeding its level in 2004.

Government bond yields are climbing as investors demand even more compensation in response to persistent inflation pressures, a resilient economy as well as high energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Reinforcing higher US inflation pressures was a data release on the economic health and sentiment across the services and manufacturing sectors.

This showed US business activity during September accelerated to its fastest rate in over five years. While signs of a booming economy would normally be considered as positive for markets, difficulties in sourcing suitable staff and order backlogs are adding to fears of higher pressure on selling prices and therefore inflation in the months to come. This strength in the economy also suggests it is strong enough to absorb another rate hike. It also feeds into the higher for longer narrative regarding interest rates, pushing bond prices, shares and the gold price lower.

One but not done? First US rate hike in three years

It was a busy week for central bank watchers. First up was the US Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which on Wednesday voted unanimously to raise US interest rates by 0.25%. This was the first Fed hike in three years. Following this move, shares and bonds rose as investors reacted positively to the implicit message that under new chair Kevin Warsh, the Fed’s priority remains targeting inflation.

Appointed by President Trump, Warsh took over in May 2026. Trump wanted a Fed chair who he hoped would be more amenable to lower interest rates than Warsh’s predecessor, Jerome Powell. Warsh voting for a rate hike demonstrated to financial markets he is not just a 'Trump proxy'.

Patience is one of the most underrated assets for saving. Rushing can lead to mistakes, while taking your time means you can make thoughtful decisions.

Investing isn't about quick wins; it's about giving your finances the time they need to grow. When you allow your money to settle in, reaching your goals, like financial independence or that dream holiday, becomes a lot easier.

How do you stay patient while saving up for something special?

Anxiety can change the way we view problems. A setback can seem much worse than it really is when we let our emotions take over.

If you are worried about money, that usually means financial security matters to you – which is a positive. Worrying is often a sign that something isn’t right. But it doesn’t always mean there is an immediate problem. Taking time to understand the facts, and talking things through with someone, can help separate genuine concerns from anxious thoughts.

Often, if you have money worries, it can feel easier to ignore a bank statement or account balance. But avoiding or delaying dealing with a problem can make things worse. As with many of life’s challenges, most problems will have a solution.

Anxiety can also cause us to catastrophise. A setback can escalate in your mind until you feel that everything is going wrong. But while these thoughts are understandable, they’re typically driven more by fear than by facts.
