💷 Make More of Your Money This Tax Year

The end of the Tax Year might feel a long way off, but good Tax Planning doesn’t need to wait until April.

Taking a little time now to review your allowances could help you make more of your money and avoid missing opportunities later.

For the 2026/27 Tax Year, some of the key allowances include:

• ISA allowance: £20,000
• Junior ISA allowance: £9,000
• Capital Gains Tax annual exemption: £3,000
• Dividend Allowance: £500
• Pension Annual Allowance: up to £60,000
• Inheritance Tax annual gifting exemption: £3,000

You may also be able to make use of Pension carry forward from previous Tax Years, tax-efficient gifts to family, and other allowances depending on your circumstances.

The important thing is that Tax Planning isn’t simply about paying less tax. It’s about making sensible use of the allowances available to you as part of your wider Financial Planning.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, so it’s important to get Professional Advice before taking action.

ISA vs Pension: Which Should You Use?

ISA or Pension? For many people, the answer is not one or the other. It is both, used properly.

ISAs and Pensions are both valuable tax wrappers, but they do different jobs.

Pensions can be powerful for long-term Retirement Planning because of tax relief and, in workplace schemes, employer contributions. The trade-off is access. Pension money is designed for later life and cannot usually be used for short-term needs.

ISAs offer flexibility. You usually don't receive Pension-style tax relief on the way in, but income and gains inside an ISA are tax-efficient, and access is much easier. That can make ISAs useful for emergency funds, medium-term goals, early retirement bridging and flexible income later.

The mistake is treating ISA vs Pension as a simple competition. The better question is what job each wrapper should do in your Financial Plan.

Which Is Best: Pension Drawdown vs Annuity

Would you rather have flexible access to your Pension, or income you cannot outlive?

Pension drawdown and annuities are two very different ways to turn Pension Savings into retirement income.

Drawdown usually keeps your Pension invested and allows flexible withdrawals. That can help with tax planning, changing income needs and legacy planning. But you keep the Investment risk, sequencing risk and the risk of running out of money.

An annuity can provide guaranteed income, often for life. That certainty can be valuable, especially for essential costs. But it may reduce flexibility, and the choices made at the start can be difficult or impossible to reverse.

For some people, the best answer is not either/or. A blended strategy can use secure income for essential spending and drawdown for flexibility and discretionary spending.

The product should follow the plan, not the other way around.

Your recommended actions....

Arrange a Retirement Planning review to compare drawdown, annuity and blended strategies against your income needs, tax position and long-term objectives. https://zurl.co/iIWdG

Should I Still Leave My Pension Untouched for Inheritance Tax Planning?

Leaving your Pension untouched used to be a common strategy. From April 2027, you may need to rethink it.

Many retirees have been told to spend non-Pension assets first and preserve Pension funds for inheritance. That often made sense when unused Pension funds could sit outside the Estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

From 6 April 2027, most unused Pension funds and Pension death benefits are due to be included in the Estate for Inheritance Tax. That means the old order of withdrawals may need to be tested again.

However, this does not mean everyone should rush to spend their Pension first. Drawing too much Pension income can create Income Tax problems, reduce retirement security, increase cash inside the Estate, or leave less flexibility for later life.

The right answer depends on income needs, tax bands, Cash Savings, ISAs, Investments, health, spouse or civil partner planning, care needs and legacy goals.

Your recommended actions...

Arrange a Retirement Income and Estate Planning Review before making major Pension withdrawals or changing your legacy strategy. https://zurl.co/IfT7U

What would happen to your Estate if the unexpected happened tomorrow?

Good Estate Planning is about far more than simply having a Will. It’s about protecting what you’ve built, making sure the right people can make decisions when needed, and helping your wealth pass to the people you care about in the way you intended.

In our latest article, we explore four important areas to consider:

🔹 Inheritance Tax Planning
🔹 Care Fee Planning
🔹 Bloodline protection
🔹 Appointing the right decision makers

These four factors can have a significant impact on how much of your wealth is protected during your lifetime and ultimately passed on to your loved ones.

Is your Estate Plan covering all four?

Will My Pension Be Subject to Inheritance Tax from 2027?

The old assumption that Pensions sit outside the Estate may no longer be safe planning.

From 6 April 2027, most unused Pension funds and Pension death benefits are due to be brought into the value of a person’s Estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

That is a major change for families who have treated Pensions as a tax-efficient way to pass wealth to the next generation.

This does not mean every family will pay more tax. It does mean that Pension Planning and Estate Planning need to be reviewed together. The position can depend on the type of Pension, the size of the Estate, available allowances, who benefits, the age at death and how benefits are paid.

Death-in-service benefits from registered Pension schemes are expected to be treated differently, so it is important not to lump all Pension-related benefits into a single category.

The biggest mistake is relying on yesterday’s Pension rule to make tomorrow’s Estate Planning decision.

Your recommended actions....

Book a Pension and Estate Planning Review to understand whether your current retirement and legacy plans still work under the April 2027 rules. https://zurl.co/TefM2

How Do You Calculate Inheritance Tax in the UK?

Inheritance Tax is usually not 40% of everything you own.

The real question is: 40% of what?

A quick calculation based only on the value of your home can give you false reassurance, or make the potential problem look much worse than it really is.

To estimate a potential Inheritance Tax liability properly, you need to consider the value of your whole Estate. This can include your property, Savings, Investments, possessions, business interests, life policies, Trust interests and certain lifetime gifts.

You then need to consider the allowances, exemptions and reliefs that may be available to you.

The standard Inheritance Tax rate is generally 40% on the taxable value above the available thresholds, not automatically 40% of your entire Estate.

And things such as the residence nil-rate band, transferable allowances between spouses and civil partners, gifts, Trusts, business assets and changing Pension rules can all affect the final position.

So, could your family be facing an Inheritance Tax bill , and is there anything you can do about it?

Come along to our complimentary Wills, Trusts & Estate Planning Seminar on Thursday 17 September to discover more about Inheritance Tax Planning, the allowances and reliefs available, and some of the legitimate Planning strategies that may help you protect more of your wealth for the people you care about.

Your recommended actions....
