Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, going live on 6 April 2026, will require sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 from self-employment and/or property to:

* Keep digital records of income and expenses
* Use MTD-compatible software
* Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
* Complete a final declaration by 31 January following the tax year

The next phase for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax;

* From 6 April 2027, the threshold drops to £30,000.
* And from 6 April 2028, it will apply to those earning over £20,000.

“Qualifying income” means the total gross income from self-employment and property before deducting any expenses, allowances, or reliefs. So even if your profits are lower, it’s the top-line figure that counts.

The goal? To reduce errors, save time, and bring tax reporting closer to real-time — all part of the government’s broader Plan for Change to boost economic growth.
