Leathley & Co. Accountants

Leathley & Co. Accountants Local accountants based in Whaley Bridge & Poynton. Accounts, tax, payroll, VAT & bookkeeping for small businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire since 2002.

We're Leathley & Co — a local, family-run accountancy practice with offices in Whaley Bridge and Poynton, proudly serving businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire since 2002. What started as one person building a practice from scratch has grown into a team of AAT-qualified accountants, bookkeepers, and payroll specialists — but the heart of it hasn't changed. We believe good accountancy shouldn't feel like a mystery. No jargon, no faceless call centres — just real people who know your name, your business, and how to help. We look after everything from annual accounts, tax returns, VAT and payroll to full bookkeeping support and QuickBooks training — for sole traders, contractors, farming businesses, fitness professionals, growing limited companies, and increasingly, people building businesses through content creation and social media. Whatever your business looks like, we take the time to actually understand it, rather than offering the same one-size-fits-all service to everyone. Whether it's a quick question or a full switch of accountants, our team is only ever a call, message or visit away — kettle's always on.

Huge congratulations to our very own Rebecca Hormann who stormed the Tor100 which is a running race of 100km with 8000m of elevation. She stormed the competition coming first female, smashing the course record and coming 10th overall. We can't wait to celebrate when she's back in the office!!

Sole trader or limited company? It's one of the first big questions any new business owner faces.

Both have their place, and the right choice depends on how much you're earning, how much risk you're comfortable with, and how much admin you're willing to take on.

Swipe through for a quick breakdown of what actually changes between the two, from setup and tax to liability and paperwork.

We help sole traders and limited companies across the High Peak and Cheshire get set up the right way from the start, or restructure later on if their circumstances have changed. If you're not sure which suits you, get in touch. 📋

Meet the team - Robin - Director

"I joined the Whaley office in 2010 after doing a degree in Classical Literature and Civilisation at the University of Birmingham. After completing AAT, I moved into managing the Whaley and Poynton offices and hope to continue growing the business for many years to come. In my spare time, I love having fun with my two girls and my wife. I'm completely obsessed with running and love doing anything from a parkrun to an ultramarathon. I've also played the guitar for 20 years, for many of which I dreamed of becoming famous. I love social media and manage many accounts which has sparked my interest in doing accountancy work for content creators and online businesses."

Did you know?

You can earn up to £1,000 a year from a side hustle, hobby, or casual selling, completely tax free, without even needing to register for Self Assessment.

It's called the trading allowance, and it covers things like selling on Vinted or eBay, freelance work on the side, or the odd bit of dog walking or baking for friends. Go over £1,000, and that's when registration kicks in.

We help sole traders, side hustlers, and small businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire understand exactly where these thresholds sit. DM us if you're not sure whether yours applies. 💡

New to self employment or renting out a property this year?

Registering for Self Assessment doesn't need to be complicated, but it does need to be done. Swipe through for exactly how to do it, step by step, before the 5 October deadline.

Miss it, and you could face a penalty even if you don't end up owing any tax. It only takes a few minutes to get started, but the sooner it's done, the calmer your January will be.

We help sole traders, landlords, and small businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire register correctly the first time. If you'd rather we just took care of it, get in touch. 📋

Fresh air, fewer numbers, still a great view of home.

Eccles Pike sits right on our doorstep in Whaley Bridge, and it's become a bit of a favourite lunchtime escape from the office. A short walk (or run) up and you get one of the best panoramas the High Peak has to offer, with the Peak District stretching out in every direction.

It's a good reminder that we're based somewhere genuinely beautiful, and we don't take that for granted.

If you're ever passing through Whaley Bridge, it's worth the climb. 🥾

3 accounting myths we hear ALL the time.

"I don't need an accountant, I'm too small." "Filing my own return saves me money." "HMRC will just tell me if I've made a mistake." We hear all three constantly, and none of them hold up.

The truth is, HMRC doesn't check every return for you. Mistakes can sit unnoticed for years while interest quietly builds, so getting it right the first time is what actually protects you. A good accountant usually saves you more than they cost, not the other way round.

We work with sole traders, landlords, and small businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire, and these myths are some of the most common reasons people end up paying more than they should. If any of these sound familiar, get in touch. 📋

Back from the summer break?

If your inbox and your paperwork have both piled up while you were away, you're not alone. September is always the month things catch up with small business owners.

A quick way back in: sort receipts and invoices from while you were away first, check nothing urgent from HMRC is sitting unread, then get back into your normal routine from there.

We work with sole traders, landlords, and small businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire, and we're always happy to help you get back on track after a break. If your books need a bit of a September reset, get in touch. ☀️

5th October is closer than you think.

New to self employment or renting out a property this year? You need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October 2026, or you could face a £100 penalty even if you don't owe any tax.

Here's what I actually think: don't leave it until the last minute. Registering is quick, but HMRC's paperwork can take weeks to arrive once you've done it.

We help sole traders, landlords, and small businesses across the High Peak and Cheshire, from Whaley Bridge to Poynton and beyond. If you're not sure whether this applies to you, get in touch and we'll sort it. 📋
