🌍 World Mental Health Day πŸ’š

Today is a reminder that not all struggles are visible. Behind the smiles, achievements, and everyday routines, many people are carrying battles we know nothing about.

Healing isn't always linear, strength isn't always loud, and it's okay to have difficult days. If you're struggling right now, please know that your feelings are valid, your story matters, and you don't have to face it alone.

Let's continue to create a world where conversations about mental health are met with understanding, compassion, and hope. Check in on your friends, family, colleagues, and most importantly, yourself.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of courage.

Be kind. Be patient. Be present.

You are not alone, and your mental health matters. πŸ’šπŸŽ—οΈ

πŸ“£ Company Directors: Don't Get Caught Out by HMRC's New Reporting Rules

Think there's nothing to report because you haven't taken a salary or dividends from your company? Think again.

HMRC has confirmed that directors who already complete a Self Assessment tax return will need to disclose their company directorships from the 2025/26 tax year, even if they received no salary, benefits, or dividends. In some cases, this could also apply to directors of dormant companies.

Key points:
βœ… Unpaid directors may still need to report their directorships
βœ… Dormant company directorships could be included
βœ… Additional disclosures may be required for owner-managed businesses
βœ… Failure to provide the information could result in HMRC queries

Our latest blog explains who is affected, what needs to be reported, and how to prepare for the changes.

🚨 Is That HMRC Text Really Genuine? 🚨

You may receive a text message from HMRC this week, but how can you tell if it's real and not a scam?

βœ… Genuine HMRC texts may:
β€’ Notify you about an overdue Self Assessment tax liability
β€’ Provide updates on a VAT registration application
β€’ Ask you to check your online HMRC account via https://smpl.is/anf6m

❌ Genuine HMRC texts will NOT:
β€’ Ask for personal or financial information
β€’ Request bank or card details β€’ Include links to websites
β€’ Offer tax refunds via text or social media

Scammers often copy HMRC branding, making fake messages look convincing. If you receive an unexpected message, don't click anything or reply. Instead, sign in to your HMRC account directly through https://smpl.is/anf6m to verify whether the contact is genuine.

If you suspect a scam:
βœ”οΈ Forward suspicious texts to 60599
βœ”οΈ Report phishing emails to [email protected]

Remember, HMRC will never contact you through social media to offer a tax rebate or request personal or financial information.

πŸ” When it comes to tax communications, always take a moment to check before you click.

πŸ’‘ Tax Tip Thursday

Don't Rush Your Stock Take

Your annual stock take could be worth more than you think.

If you have slow-moving, damaged, obsolete, or unsellable stock, it may be possible to reduce its value in your accounts and claim a corporation tax deduction.

βœ… Review old stock carefully
βœ… Identify damaged or discontinued items
βœ… Record stock that will need to be sold at a discount
βœ… Keep evidence and accurate records

For tax purposes, stock should be valued at the lower of cost or net realisable value. A thorough stock take could uncover valuable tax savings that a quick count might miss.

πŸ“¦ Good stock records don't just improve inventory management, they could help reduce your corporation tax bill.

πŸ“£ Call to Action:

πŸ’‘ Xero Tip!

Save a Snapshot of Your Reports πŸ“Š

Have you ever created a report in Xero, only to realise that if the underlying data changes, the report changes too?

The good news is there's a simple way to keep an exact copy of your report as it was on the day you created it.

βœ… Run your report
βœ… Click Publish
βœ… Choose to save it as a PDF or Excel file
βœ… Access it anytime from the Published tab in Reports

Publishing creates a static version of the report, meaning it won't be affected by any future changes made to transactions or accounting data. It's a great way to keep accurate records, support year-end reviews, and maintain an audit trail.

πŸ’‘ A simple feature that can save a lot of confusion later!

Do you use Xero's Publish feature, or is this a new tip for you?

HMRC takes aim at side hustles

If you earn extra income from a side hustle, HMRC is reminding taxpayers to check whether they need to register for Self Assessment.

With wedding season in full swing, photographers, cake makers, content creators and other freelance suppliers are among those being encouraged to review their tax obligations.

πŸ“Œ Key points:
βœ… The Β£1,000 trading allowance applies to your total side hustle income, not each activity separately.

βœ… If your combined earnings exceed Β£1,000 in a tax year, you may need to declare the income.

βœ… Selling unwanted personal possessions is usually not taxable. Regular buying and selling for profit or providing paid services may be.

βœ… New Self Assessment registrations for 2025/26 must be completed by 5 October 2026.

βœ… Online tax returns and payments will be due by 31 January 2027.

If you're unsure whether your side income needs to be reported, now is a good time to review your position and seek advice if needed.

Friday Fun Fact

Receipts from Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax and NIC's combined accounted for 59% of annual receipts with VAT and business taxes the next largest contributors.

To put that into perspective, that's over Β£2.5 billion every day flowing into the UK's public finances. It's a mind boggling figure that underscores the scale of tax administration in the modern economy.
