Giving to charity is great for the causes you care about, but did you know it could also reduce your tax bill? 💷❤️

From Gift Aid and higher-rate tax relief to donations made through a limited company, there are several ways charitable giving can be tax-efficient.

In our post we look at:

❤️ How Gift Aid actually works

Freelancing: the dream of being your own boss. 🙌

Also freelancing…

📩 Client emails piling up
⏰ Three deadlines at once
💷 An invoice that's STILL not been paid
🧾 That HMRC deadline getting suspiciously close
💻 And the actual work you need to somehow fit in

When you're the boss, finance team, sales department and admin assistant all rolled into one, things can get a little… hectic. 😅

Our latest post looks at practical ways to take some of the stress out of freelance life, get your finances under control and stop feeling like you're constantly playing catch-up.

If your to-do list seems to grow faster than you can tick things off, this one might be for you. 👇

Turnover, gross profit, net profit... three figures people mix up all the time. But knowing the difference is the key to understanding how your business is really doing. 📊

Here's the quick version 👇

💷 Turnover - The total you've brought in from sales, before any costs come out. It's your "top line", the headline number, but on its own it tells you very little.

📉 Gross profit - Turnover minus the direct costs of what you sell (stock, materials, delivery). This shows how profitable your actual products or services are, before overheads.

✅ Net profit - What's left after ALL costs come out, overheads, wages, rent, tax and everything else. This is your "bottom line", the number that shows what the business truly earns.

The trap? A big turnover can hide a tiny net profit. You can be busy, turning over loads, and still barely making money once everything's accounted for.

That's why the bottom line matters more than the top line. Understanding all three is how you make smarter decisions.

Most people think bookkeeping is just admin. Something you do to keep HMRC happy. 📚

But done properly, it's one of the most powerful tools you have as a business owner.

Good bookkeeping tells you:
💷 Exactly how your cash flow is looking, week to week
📈 Whether you're actually making a profit (and where it's coming from)
🧾 How much tax is building up, so year end holds no nasty surprises
🎯 Which decisions are paying off and which aren't

Waiting until year end to look at your numbers means you're always looking backwards. Staying on top of them means you can plan ahead, make confident calls and never get caught out by a tax bill.

Compliance is the minimum. Insight is the real value.

Want your books kept clear, current and actually useful? We can help.

Key UK accounting dates upcoming for October 2026. 🗓️ Bookmark this one.

Here are the ones most likely to matter this month:

💷 1 Oct - Corporation Tax payment due (companies with a 31 December 2025 year end)
📅 5 Oct - Deadline to notify HMRC if you need to register for Self Assessment for 25-26
💻 7 Oct - VAT return and payment (online) for the period ended 31 August 2026
📊 19 Oct - Monthly CIS return, plus postal PAYE/NIC/CIS payments
🖥️ 22 Oct - Electronic PAYE, NIC and CIS payments must clear HMRC
⚠️ 31 Oct - Deadline for PAPER Self Assessment returns for 2025-26

That last one's the headline this month. If you still file on paper, 31 October is your cut-off, though you've got until 31 January 2027 if you switch to filing online.

There are a few more dates too (CT61, plastic packaging tax, non-resident landlord payments among them). We've listed every October deadline in full here 👇

Contractors, this one's for you. ⏰

The monthly CIS return deadline is the 19th of every month, and missing it triggers an automatic £100 penalty, even if the return is just one day late.

Your CIS return covers the tax month running from the 6th to the 5th, and it must reach HMRC by the 19th, whether or not you've paid any subcontractors that month.

A few reminders:
📋 File even if it's a nil return (no payments made)
💷 £100 penalty applies the moment you're late, and it climbs the longer you leave it
✅ Verify subcontractors and apply the correct deduction rate
🗓️ Set a recurring reminder so it never sneaks up on you

Staying on top of CIS every month keeps you compliant and avoids penalties stacking up.

Need a hand with CIS returns and deductions? We can take it off your plate.

🚨 Got a letter from HMRC? Before you panic... check it’s actually HMRC.

Scam letters, emails and messages can look surprisingly convincing. They might have an HMRC logo, your correct business details, official-looking references and a very urgent demand for payment.

So how do you spot a fake?

Our latest post looks at:

✉️ The warning signs to look for
💷 How to check an unexpected tax demand
📱 Why you should be careful with QR codes
🔍 How to verify a letter with HMRC
⚠️ What to do if you’ve already paid or shared information

The golden rule? Don’t ignore it, but don’t rush to pay it either. Check first.

Freelancer and self-employed... same thing, right? Not quite. 🤔

HMRC treats them differently, and mixing them up can catch you out when it comes to registering, paying tax, or claiming expenses. If you're freelancing (or thinking about it), this one's worth a read.

We look at what actually separates the two, when you need to register with HMRC, and how Making Tax Digital now affects higher-earning sole traders.
