Do you worry about having enough put aside for payday?

Try this simple habit. Work out your total monthly payroll cost, divide it by the number of working days, and set up a daily transfer into a separate payroll pot.

For example:
£10,000 monthly payroll cost
÷ 20 working days
= £500 a day

Remember to include PAYE, NIC and employer pension costs, not just the net wages.

By payday, the money's already there.

The Autumn Budget is next Wednesday, 28th October.

There's always plenty of talk beforehand about what might change, so I'd take most of it with a pinch of salt until we hear the actual announcements.

Once it's out, we'll share what it means for small businesses, in plain English.

In the meantime, if you could change one thing for small business owners, what would it be? Let me know in the comments.

Do you need a separate bank account for your business?

If you run a limited company, yes. The company's money belongs to the company, not to you personally, so it needs its own account.

If you're a sole trader, it isn't a legal requirement, but I'd still recommend it. When business and personal spending all go through one account, it takes much longer to work out what's what, and it's easy to miss costs you could claim.

With Making Tax Digital now in place for some sole traders, keeping things separate makes those quarterly updates a lot easier.

When did you last increase your prices?

If your wages, software, insurance and rent have all gone up but your prices haven't, your profit is quietly being squeezed.

You don't need a huge increase overnight. But reviewing your prices should be a regular part of running your business, not something you only think about when things get tight.

When did you last review yours?

3 simple ways to improve your cash flow in Xero

1. Turn on invoice reminders
Let Xero chase overdue invoices for you. You choose when they go out and can tweak the wording.

2. Use Xero's cash flow manager
See what's due in and which bills are coming up, so you can plan ahead and avoid surprises.

3. Make it easy for customers to pay
Add an online payment option to your invoices so customers can pay straight away.

Small changes, but they can make a big difference to your cash flow. If you're not sure where to start with any of these, drop me a line.

Thinking of taking on an employee?

Say you’re looking at a salary of £35,000 a year. That isn’t what that employee will actually cost your business.

On top of salary, you could also have:
Employer’s National Insurance
Workplace pension contributions
Cover during holidays, where needed
Payroll and admin
Training
Equipment and software
Uniform

So the question isn’t just: can I afford the salary?

It’s: what does this person need to generate for the business to make employing them worthwhile?

We’ll happily take care of the bit you hate!

We’ve been looking after Becky’s limited company for over seven years. Thank you for such a lovely review, Becky. We’re always happy to answer questions and explain things clearly, without the jargon.

With 3 months left of 2026, there’s still time to make a difference to your business before the year ends.

Take an hour to look at your numbers, check what’s owed to you and what bills are coming up. Then pick one thing you’ve been putting off and give it a date.

It doesn’t have to be a huge change. A few good decisions now could make January feel very different.

What’s one thing you want to sort before the end of the year?
