💰 5 Simple Ways to Improve Cash Flow in Your Business

A profitable business can still struggle if cash isn’t flowing at the right time.

Here are 5 practical ways to improve your cash flow:

1️⃣ Invoice promptly – Don’t wait until the end of the month. Send invoices as soon as the work is completed.
2️⃣ Tighten your payment terms – Be clear about when payment is due and follow up quickly on overdue invoices.
3️⃣ Review your expenses – Go through your regular costs and identify subscriptions, suppliers or services you could reduce, renegotiate or cancel.
4️⃣ Manage stock carefully – Too much money tied up in slow-moving stock can put unnecessary pressure on your cash flow.
5️⃣ Forecast your cash flow – Look ahead at expected income and expenses so you can spot potential cash shortages before they become a problem.

👉 Remember: Cash flow isn’t just about how much money your business makes — it’s about when the money comes in and when it goes out.

What’s the biggest cash-flow challenge your business faces? 💬

🏠 Landlords – Are You Making the Most of the Property Allowance?

As an accountant, one of the questions I’m often asked is:

“What is the £1,000 Property Allowance, and can I use it for my rental property?”

The Property Allowance allows individuals to receive up to £1,000 of gross property income in a tax year tax-free, subject to certain conditions.

However, if your property income is above £1,000, you need to think carefully before simply claiming the allowance.

You generally have two options:

🔹 Claim the £1,000 Property Allowance – but you cannot then deduct your actual allowable property expenses.

🔹 Declare your property income and deduct your actual allowable expenses – which could be more beneficial if you have significant costs such as repairs, insurance, professional fees and other allowable expenses.

💡 My advice to landlords: Don’t automatically assume the £1,000 allowance is the best option. Compare the two methods and choose the one that gives you the most favourable tax result.

There are also specific rules for jointly owned properties, Rent a Room, partnerships and income from connected persons, so the position isn't always straightforward.

📩 If you're a landlord and you're unsure whether you're claiming the right expenses or using the most tax-efficient method, speak to an accountant before submitting your tax return.

🚨 HMRC MAY AUTOMATICALLY REGISTER YOU FOR MAKING TAX DIGITAL

If you’re self-employed or a landlord and you’re required to join Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, but you haven’t registered yourself yet, this is something you need to be aware of.

HMRC is using the information it already holds to identify taxpayers who are expected to come within the MTD rules. In some cases, HMRC may take steps to automatically register taxpayers who have not signed up themselves.

👉 Don’t assume that because you haven’t registered, you’re not affected.
Making Tax Digital is being introduced in stages, and those who fall within the rules will need to use compatible software to keep digital records and submit their Income Tax information to HMRC.

If you think you may be affected, now is a good time to check your position rather than waiting for HMRC to contact you.

📌 If you’re unsure whether MTD applies to you, or what you need to do, speak to your Accountant.
Being proactive now could save a lot of stress later.

📢 ARE YOU NEWLY SELF-EMPLOYED? DON’T MISS THIS DEADLINE! 💷

If you started earning £1,000 or more from self-employed work between 6th April 2025 and 5th April 2026, you will need to register as self-employed with HMRC.

📅 Deadline: 5th October

Whether you’re freelancing, running a small business, doing side work, selling your services, or earning money through your own business — it’s important to check whether you need to register.

⚠️ Don’t leave it until the last minute! Registering late could potentially lead to penalties.

If you’re unsure whether you need to register or what you need to do, get professional advice and make sure you’re on the right side of HMRC rules.

💬 Know someone who has started a side hustle or self-employed business? Tag them or share this post so they don’t miss the deadline!
