A client asked us this week: "If HMRC's going to sign me up anyway, why does it matter if I do it first?"

Fair question. HMRC has started automatically signing up sole traders and landlords who should already be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax but haven't registered themselves, that process is running now, in stages, over the coming months.

The obligation doesn't change either way, you still need software in place, and you still need to file quarterly. What changes is who's in control. Register yourself and you choose the software and get things set up properly. Let HMRC do it for you, and you're working to their timeline with less room to sort things out before your next deadline.

Over 570,000 people have registered so far, against roughly 864,000 expected to be in scope. If you're not sure which side of that gap you're on, worth checking now, the first quarterly deadline has already been and gone.

The temporary 5% VAT rate for hospitality and leisure ends on 1 September, and it's the kind of change that's easy to miss until it shows up as an error on a VAT return.

From that date, admissions, food and drink that have been at 5% since late June revert to the standard rate. Till systems, booking platforms and any pre-printed pricing all need switching back, and it's worth checking now rather than the morning of the 1st.

One thing we're seeing catch people out: advance bookings taken during the reduced-rate period but delivered after 1 September. HMRC's rules on which rate applies depend on when the service is actually provided, not when it was booked or paid for, so it's worth checking anything sold in the last few weeks of August.
