Emma White walked into A4G at 18 as a Level 1 trainee. Now she’s Co Managing Partner.
We could just tell you that and move on. But the honest version is: it wasn't magic, and it wasn't luck. It was five deliberate decisions we made 31 years ago and never stopped making. Here's what actually happened along the way and what you could steal from it. 👇
1. We didn't wait for a "perfect hire." Back then we were 5 people above a hairdresser. No budget for senior talent. So we looked at the work nobody had time for, built a system simple enough for a beginner to run, and hired for potential instead of experience. Emma didn't walk in with a qualification. She walked in with a start date.
2. We put recruitment on the calendar, not on a crisis. Every February, without fail, we open trainee recruitment, aligned with National Apprenticeship Week. Not when someone quits. Not when we're drowning. On a schedule. Because the hires you make in a panic are rarely the ones who become Partners 20 years later.
3. We told her exactly what "good" looked like. Junior, intermediate, senior, no mystery, no guesswork. Emma always knew what the next stage looked like, which meant she could actually aim for it.
4. Nobody made her choose between doing the job and growing in it. A Team Leader handled her day-to-day workload. A separate Training and Development Manager focused purely on where she was headed. When things got busy, her progression didn't quietly get shelved, because it wasn't one person's job to drop.
5. Every year that passed, it got noticed. Long service isn't a footnote here. It's said out loud. And that's part of why people stay long enough to become the next Partner, not just the next hire.
31 years later, five of our seven Partners started exactly where Emma did: at Level 1. That's not a coincidence. That's the system working exactly as intended.
We've recently been shortlisted for the Accounting Excellence Employer of the Year award. We think Emma's story is a pretty good explanation why.
And to top it off, Emma has recently been placed as one of Ignition’s Top 50 women in accounting.
