“I can’t retire until I’m 67?” ☹️
That’s what a new client said to me when we met! “My state pension doesn’t start until I’m 67, like all of my other pensions?”
This happens more than you think, some people are under the impression that you can’t access your pensions until state pension, but in most cases that’s not true.
Under current rules you can take private pensions from 55 (57 from 2028) subject to any specific caveats with your own pension.
Maybe retirement isn’t as far away as you think? ☕️
Accessing your pension early means your pot has to last longer and has less time to grow. It is vital to ensure your funds can sustainably bridge the gap until your State Pension begins.
Not all pensions are the same. Some schemes, particularly Defined Benefit (final salary) plans, may carry high penalties or result in the loss of valuable safeguarded benefits if accessed early.
Typically only the first 25% of your pension is typically tax-free. The remaining 75% is subject to income tax. Tax rules depend on your individual circumstances and are subject to change.
