Are you ready for the Companies House accounts filing changes?

From 1st April 2028, major changes will affect how UK companies file their annual accounts, including mandatory software-only filing.

Small companies and micro-entities will also need to file profit and loss accounts, although they will be able to opt out of having this information published on the public register. Abridged accounts will also be removed.

Our Director and industry expert on accounts auditing and reporting, Steve Collings, explains what's changing and what businesses can do to prepare.

HMRC is writing to some self-employed individuals whose National Insurance (NI) records
may contain gaps that could affect their State Pension.

If you receive a letter, don’t ignore it. In some cases, you may be able to
boost your State Pension by making voluntary NI contributions for missing years
going back as far as 2015-16.

The issue affects some people who were self-employed between 2015 and early
2024. HMRC believes up to 800,000 taxpayers could be affected.

What should you do?

If HMRC contacts you, check:

- Your State Pension forecast.
- Your National Insurance record.
- Whether there are any missing years.
- Whether filling those gaps would increase your State Pension.

You can do this through your Personal Tax Account on GOV.UK - gov.uk/personal-tax-account

Sign into or set up a personal tax account to check and manage HMRC records, including Income Tax, change of address, Self Assessment and company car tax.

Changes to the VAT Capital Goods Scheme came into effect on 29th July 2026 – but what do they mean for businesses?

The changes include:
🔹 An increase in the threshold for land, buildings and civil engineering works from £250,000 to £600,000 (excluding VAT)
🔹 The removal of computers and computer equipment from the scheme
🔹 Transitional rules for assets and expenditure around the changeover date

Businesses with existing assets already within the Capital Goods Scheme may still need to comply with the previous rules until the relevant adjustment period comes to an end.

Our latest blog by our Accounts Manager, Amy Daniels, explains the changes, which businesses could be affected and what you may need to consider when reviewing capital expenditure.

It's always lovely to receive positive feedback from our clients, and we really appreciate these kind words from Paul Lockett of Esquire Glass Ltd.

"Just a quick note to thank you all for your efforts in assisting us recently. Your support has made a difficult process as smooth as possible, and it's much appreciated.

In a world where we are quick to complain, we sometimes overlook the praise when things have gone well."

Thank you, Paul, for taking the time to share your feedback. We're pleased that the LWA team could make the process that little bit easier.

Most other Benefits in Kind will follow from 6th April 2028, while beneficial loans and employer-provided living accommodation will remain outside the mandatory regime.

Although the changes are not yet in force, now is a good time to review the benefits you provide and prepare your payroll processes.
