Autumn is a busy season for tax deadlines, and the Autumn Budget lands on 28 October too.

Whether you’re a company director or a sole trader, these are the key dates to have in your diary:

🔴 22 Oct: PAYE & NIC payment (electronic) for the month to 5 October
⚫ 28 Oct: Autumn Budget 2026
🔴 31 Oct: Paper Self Assessment returns for 2025/26, plus Companies House accounts for 31 January year-ends
🔴 1 Nov: Corporation Tax payment for 31 January 2026 year-ends
🔴 7 Nov: Making Tax Digital quarterly update (to 5 Oct) and VAT returns for the quarter to 30 September

💡 1 November falls on a Sunday and 7 November on a Saturday this year, so aim to have everything done by the Friday before.

Not sure which of these apply to you? Drop us a message or comment below and our friendly team will point you in the right direction. We’ll also be sharing what the Budget means for local businesses once it’s announced.

Are you leaving money on the table this autumn?

Lots of business owners pay more tax than they need to, simply because they don't know what they can claim. Here are four expenses that often get missed:

🏠 Home office: a share of your household bills if you work from home
🚗 Travel: business mileage, train fares and parking (not your daily commute)
🎓 Training: courses that keep your existing skills up to date
💻 Software: accounting apps, subscriptions and the tools you run your business on

Self Assessment is due on 31 January, so now's a good time to get your records in order rather than leaving it to the last minute.

💬 Not sure whether something counts? Drop it in the comments and we'll let you know.

TAX TIP TUESDAY

Don’t leave tax planning until the deadline.

Tax planning works best when it happens before the deadline is approaching.
Keeping on top of your finances throughout the year gives you more time to understand what may be due, prepare for upcoming payments and ask questions before they become urgent.
A few things worth keeping on top of:
✔️ Your income and expenses
✔️ Your bookkeeping records
✔️ Money set aside for tax
✔️ Upcoming tax deadlines
✔️ Any changes happening within your business

The earlier you have a clear picture of your finances, the easier it is to plan ahead.
At Quality Accountants, we’re here to make tax and accounting feel straightforward — without the last-minute panic.

When should I speak to an accountant?

A common misconception is that you only need your accountant when there's a tax return to complete.

In reality, there are plenty of times when having a conversation can help — when you're starting out, growing, struggling with cashflow, planning ahead or making a big business decision.
And sometimes, it's simply because you're not sure what you should be doing next.
You don't have to wait until something becomes a problem.
At Quality Accountants, we're here to make the numbers easier to understand and help you feel more informed about your business finances.
📩 Got a question? Send us a message — we're always happy to have a chat.

What records should you actually be keeping for your business?
It's one of those jobs that's easy to put off, but keeping accurate records is an important part of running a business.
Think invoices, receipts, expenses, bank records, payroll information and the documents you use for your tax returns.
Good record keeping doesn't just help at tax time either. It gives you a much clearer picture of what's happening with your business finances throughout the year.
Not sure whether you're keeping everything you need?
