"I just take out whatever's left." Sound familiar?
A client said this to me and it broke my heart a bit. No set salary, no plan, just whatever's sitting in the account at the end of the month.
Here's why that matters more than you think:
Lenders don't like it (say goodbye to that mortgage).
HMRC doesn't like it either, irregular withdrawals can look like disguised salary.
Paying yourself a proper, regular amount isn't a treat you earn later. It's the foundation everything else sits on.

Quick one for you this Friday evening!
When did you last check your cash flow forecast against what's actually happening in your bank account?
Forecasts made back in January can drift a long way from reality by September. A quick comparison now means you can close the gap while there's still time to act, rather than in December when options run thin.
Pop it in the diary for next week. Future you will be relieved you did.

End of August, and if you've been following along, hopefully your books are looking a little less scary than they did a few weeks ago.
I've spent most of my back to basics energy this month on client accounts and slightly less on my own filing, if I'm honest. Fletcher the basset hound has offered zero help with either, but he has provided excellent moral support from under my desk. Heidi has just been a distraction!
September's just around the corner. New term, new routine, and a proper chance to head into Q4 knowing exactly where you stand.
Here's to a settled autumn and business admin that isn't hiding in a drawer somewhere.

One of the simplest habits that makes the biggest difference.
The problem with tax usually isn't the bill. It's not knowing what the bill is going to be.
So here's the tip: every time money comes in, transfer 20% straight into a separate savings account. Label it tax. Don't touch it.
Do that consistently and you'll never again have that horrible moment in January where the bill lands and the money isn't there.

This month's Jungle Missive is out now.
Whether summer's had you running flat out or wondering where your customers have gone, it's usually the quiet tasks, invoicing, reconciling, chasing what's owed, that slip down the list. This month's newsletter is about getting back to basics now the diary's settling and things are returning to normal.
None of it needs to happen in one sitting. Little and often is what turns a mountain back into a molehill.

Quick one for you this week.
When did you last reconcile your accounts against your bank statements?
If it's been a while, here's your nudge. A quick check now will flag anything that's slipped through before it turns into a bigger problem, a missed payment, a duplicate charge, an invoice that never actually landed.
It doesn't need to take long. Ten minutes with a cup of tea and your bank app is usually enough to catch the surprises early.
Pop it in the diary this week. Future you will be relieved you did.
