Sometimes, a thank you says far more than you expect. 💙

James Fairweather FCCA received a lovely surprise in the post last week, a hamper from a client he has supported throughout their business journey.

The note inside thanked him for “supporting my business from beginning to end” and for being “an incredible support throughout.”

And honestly, this is the bit of our job that means so much to us.

Behind the accounts, tax returns, conversations and decisions are real people, building businesses that are a huge part of their lives. Over the years, we get to know those people. We see the highs, help them through the challenges and, sometimes, support them as one chapter comes to an end and another begins.

That’s why receiving something like this means far more than the hamper itself.

It’s a reminder of the relationships our team build with our clients and the trust that sits behind them.

Well done Jamie, and to our lovely client, thank you for such a thoughtful gesture. We’re excited to see what comes next for you!

Northamptonshire has plenty of ambitious businesses quietly getting on with growth.

Not every growing business shouts about it. Many are simply focused on serving customers, building teams, improving operations and making careful decisions.

But as the business grows, the financial questions usually get bigger too.
Questions around cashflow, funding, tax planning, staffing, structure, profitability and long-term plans.

That is where the right advice can make growth feel more manageable.

If you are building a business locally and thinking about the next stage, we would be happy to talk.

📅 October Dates & Deadlines for Business Owners

October is here, and while we're heading into the final few months of the year, there are still plenty of important dates to keep on your radar.

We've pulled together some of the key October deadlines in our calendar below 👇

📌 1 October – Corporation Tax payment due for some companies
📌 5 October – Deadline to register for Self Assessment where applicable
📌 7 October – VAT return and payment deadline for relevant VAT periods
📌 19 October – PAYE, NIC and CIS postal payment deadline
📌 22 October – Electronic PAYE, NIC and CIS payment deadline
📌 31 October – Paper Self Assessment tax return deadline

And although 31 January might still feel a long way off, October is a very good time to start thinking about Self Assessment.

Getting everything together early means more time to understand what you owe, plan for the payment and deal with any questions without the January rush. HMRC's online filing and payment deadline for 2025/26 Self Assessment is 31 January 2027.

At Elsby & Co, we'd always rather help you plan ahead than deal with a last-minute panic. So if you have a tax return approaching, aren't sure whether you need to register, or simply want a clearer idea of what's coming up, speak to our team.

A little preparation now can make January feel a whole lot easier.

5th October is an important date for many sole traders and self-employed individuals.

If you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the first time, 5 October is the deadline to register with HMRC for the 2025/26 tax year.
Leaving it until the last minute can create unnecessary stress, especially if you're unsure what information HMRC needs or whether you need to register at all.

If you've recently become self-employed or started earning income that needs declaring through Self Assessment, now is a good time to check.

Not sure where you stand? We're always happy to help point you in the right direction.

Business owners are expected to make big financial decisions, often without all the information they need.

One of the biggest misconceptions about running a business is that you're supposed to have all the answers. The reality is that most business owners are experts in what they do, not necessarily in finance, tax or business planning.

You might be brilliant at winning new customers, delivering exceptional service or leading a growing team. That doesn't automatically mean you'll know how to interpret management accounts, whether your margins are where they should be, or if your current company structure is still the right fit for your future plans.

As businesses grow, the decisions often become more complex too. Questions around tax planning, funding options, succession planning and long-term profitability can have a significant impact on the future of the business, but they're not always straightforward to navigate alone.

And they shouldn't have to be.

The role of a trusted adviser isn't to make decisions for business owners. It's to provide the information, insight and perspective needed to make those decisions with confidence.

Sometimes that means highlighting opportunities you hadn't considered. Sometimes it means challenging assumptions. And sometimes it's simply providing reassurance that you're already heading in the right direction.

Either way, clarity has value. Because making informed decisions is usually far more powerful than trying to make perfect decisions.

You don't need to have all the answers before asking for support. In fact, that's often the best time to start the conversation.

Chatting with Carina Benzie recently about conversations she’s been having with prospective clients and she shared an insight that really stuck with us.

“We had a lead come through not long ago,” she said. “We quoted… but we were too expensive.” Nothing unusual in that.

The business chose a cheaper, local firm instead. But not long after, they came back.

“It hadn’t worked out,” Carina explained. “They realised what they actually needed was the confidence that things were being done properly.”

So they asked for a new quote. And this time, their focus wasn’t just on price – it was on security, clarity, and trust.

Now, they’re a very happy client.

Carina’s takeaway? “Cost matters. But feeling confident that everything is being done, and done right, matters more.”

It’s something we’re seeing more often. Choosing an accountant isn’t just about the fee - it’s about knowing someone’s got your back, spotting things early, and giving you the confidence to focus on running your business.

"Knowledgeable, professional, prompt and super helpful."

When clients describe us in just a few words, it's often the little things that mean the most.

Being responsive when a client has a question.
Providing advice that's easy to understand.
Supporting business owners through challenges as well as opportunities. And always being available when they need us.

We know that accounting is about much more than year-end accounts and tax returns. It's about building relationships, understanding our clients' goals and giving them the confidence that somebody is there to help when they need it.

So receiving feedback like this from a client is something we're incredibly grateful for:

"Great company, knowledgeable, very professional, prompt, super helpful, nothing seems too much trouble. I would highly recommend them."

A huge thank you to our client for taking the time to leave such a fantastic review. Reviews like these mean a lot to our team and remind us why we do what we do.

We asked our team to describe Elsby in one word.

The answers matter because they say a lot about the kind of firm we are trying to be.

Not just for our clients, but for our team too.
Words like:
😊proactive
😊supportive
😊approachable
😊trusted
😊progressive

For us, those are not just nice words to put on a website. They have to show up in the way we work, the advice we give and the relationships we build.
Because clients need more than technical knowledge. They need people they trust to do the right thing.

What word would you want to use to describe your accountant?

Hiring your first senior employee isn't just a people decision. It's a financial one too.

There often comes a point in a growing business when the workload becomes too much for the owner and the existing team. You know you need more expertise. More leadership. Someone who can take responsibility, improve processes and help drive the business forward.

Bringing in a senior hire can be transformational, but it also represents one of the biggest investments many businesses will make.

It's not just the salary to consider. There are pensions, National Insurance, training, benefits and the long-term commitment that comes with adding a senior role to the business.

Before taking the leap, it's worth stepping back and asking a few important questions.

Can the business comfortably afford the additional cost?
What level of revenue or profit does the role need to help generate?
If growth takes longer than expected, does the business still have enough breathing room?
And ultimately, will this appointment strengthen profitability over time, or simply add another layer of overhead?

These questions aren't reasons to delay growth, they're reasons to plan for it properly.

The most successful recruitment decisions are usually made when the numbers and the people strategy are considered together. Having a clear understanding of the financial impact can give business owners the confidence to invest at the right time and for the right reasons.

If recruitment is part of your growth plans over the next 12 months, make sure the numbers are part of the conversation from the start.
