πŸš— Mandatory Payrolling of Benefits in Kind: Are You Ready for April 2027?

Important changes to the way Benefits in Kind (BIKs) are taxed are on the horizon.

From 6 April 2027, HMRC will require employers to payroll certain benefits, meaning employees will pay tax on these benefits in real time through payroll, rather than through adjustments to their tax code.

βœ… Phase 1 includes:

Company cars
Car fuel
Vans
Van fuel
Medical benefits

A wider range of benefits will follow from April 2028.

What does this mean for employers?

Now is the time to:
βœ” Review payroll software and processes
βœ” Ensure systems are ready for mandatory payrolling
βœ” Communicate the changes to employees well in advance

Many employees may not realise they currently pay tax on benefits through their tax code. From April 2027, this will change for the benefits listed above.

Some employees could see what appears to be a temporary overlap between tax collected on previous years' benefits and tax being collected in real time on current benefits. While this is not double taxation, it may cause confusion if not explained clearly.

πŸ“£ Early communication is key to helping employees understand the impact on their tax code and take-home pay.

If you have any questions about payroll, Benefits in Kind, or preparing your business for these changes, we'd be happy to help.

πŸš€ One of the things I enjoy most about my role is helping business owners achieve major milestones after years of hard work building something valuable.

Recently, I have been supporting the owners of a long-established family business as they prepare for a future sale. Together, we developed an exit strategy, prepared key information for potential buyers, identified suitable brokers, and strengthened the business’s financial reporting and systems.

πŸ“ˆ By taking a closer look at the business, we also identified significant opportunities to improve profitability before the sale completes, helping to maximise value and improve readiness for due diligence.

πŸ’‘ It's projects like these that remind me that accountancy is about far more than compliance. At Hub Chartered Accountants, we help clients improve performance, navigate important transitions, and achieve their long-term goals.

🀝 Whether it's increasing profitability, planning succession, or preparing for a sale, supporting clients through these journeys is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

πŸ“ž If you are thinking about selling your business, planning for succession, or simply looking for ways to improve profitability and maximise value, we would be delighted to have a conversation and explore how we can help.

πŸ“’ Budget 2026 Date Confirmed: 28 October 2026

The Chancellor has announced that Budget 2026 will be delivered on 28 October 2026, highlighting a commitment to economic stability for businesses and families across the UK.

The government has stated that it will continue to meet its fiscal rules, with the Budget expected to focus on moving "money and power out of Westminster" and supporting growth throughout the country.

Alongside the Budget, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) will publish its latest economic and fiscal forecast, providing insight into the UK's financial outlook.

πŸ’‘ At Hub Chartered Accountants, we will be monitoring the announcements closely and keeping our clients informed of any tax or financial changes that may affect them.

If you are concerned about how current or proposed tax measures could impact you or your business, get in touch with our team for tailored advice.

🌱 Client Success Story: From Gut Feeling to Clear Direction

Many business owners are brilliant at what they do, but running a growing business without understanding the numbers can feel like driving with your eyes half closed.

One of our clients came to us with ambitious growth plans, a strong work ethic, and a desire to build something bigger. Whilst they were already successful, they felt they were making key business decisions without the clarity and visibility they needed.

Through a structured monthly advisory programme, we helped them gain greater visibility over profitability, pricing, cash flow, and job performance. Together, we turned financial data into practical business decisions.

The result? Better financial awareness, stronger decision-making, improved cash flow management, and a clear strategic plan for the future.

πŸ’¬ Client Feedback

"For the first time, I felt like I truly understood the numbers behind my business. The regular meetings gave me clarity, accountability and confidence in the decisions I was making."
Instead of guessing what was working, I could actually see it. That changed everything."

At Hub, we believe numbers should help you make better decisions, not create confusion.

If you would like to gain greater clarity over your business and develop a plan for growth, why not book a HubSmart Session?

πŸ’‘ Turning Your Hobby Into a Side Hustle? Don't Forget the Tax Rules

Wedding season is in full swing, and many people are earning extra income from activities such as:

πŸŽ‚ Cake making
πŸ“Έ Photography or videography
πŸ’Œ Wedding stationery design
🎨 Craft sales and other creative services

If your total side hustle income exceeds Β£1,000 in a tax year, you may need to register for Self Assessment and pay tax on your earnings.

It's important to remember that the Β£1,000 trading allowance is a combined total across all your side hustles, not a separate allowance for each activity.

While selling unwanted personal items is unlikely to trigger a tax liability, regularly selling goods for profit or providing services for payment could be considered trading and may need to be declared to HMRC.

βœ… Not sure whether your side income needs reporting? βœ… Unsure if you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return?

We are here to help. Get in touch with our team for straightforward advice and peace of mind.

πŸ–οΈ What would you do with more time, less stress, and a stronger business?

Many business owners start out chasing higher profits. But what they really want is the freedom that comes with them.

One of our Hub Smart clients, an independent jeweller, joined the programme with a modest goal of improving profit and cash flow by 20%. Twelve months later, the results were extraordinary:

✨ Revenue increased by 124%
✨ Gross profit increased by 104%

But the biggest success wasn't in the numbers.

It was being able to take a well-earned holiday, step away from the business, and enjoy time with family knowing everything was under control.

At Hub Smart, we help business owners understand their numbers, improve performance, and build a business that supports the life they want to live.

Because success isn't just about making more money.

It's about having the time to enjoy it. πŸŒŠβ˜€οΈ
