Protection built into your mortgage sounds like it's sorted but it's rarely enough on its own and almost nobody points this out.

Many buyers assume that because their lender mentioned life insurance, or because they have death in service through work, they're covered. Death in service typically pays two to four times your salary but it stops the moment you leave that employer and it's rarely designed with your specific mortgage or family costs in mind.

If you were relying on a workplace benefit tied to a job you might not always have, that's worth a second look.

It's not about buying more cover for the sake of it. It's about knowing what you'd actually be left with.

Buying your first home comes with enough to think about without half-true rumours getting in the way. Some of the most common mortgage myths stop people from even starting the process, while others lead to decisions that cost real money.

Here are five of the biggest, and what’s true in 2026.

He had pension pots from four different employers.

He didn't know two of them still existed until we went looking.

It's an easy thing to lose track of. New job, new provider, old paperwork gets filed away and forgotten. Multiply that across a career of ten or eleven jobs - the UK average - and it's not hard to see how 3.3 million pension pots end up lost, worth an estimated £31.1 billion between them (Pensions Policy Institute).

Once we found them, the picture of his actual retirement position looked completely different from what he'd assumed walking in.
Not because he'd done anything wrong. Just because nobody had ever put it all in one place for him before.

Illustrative example based on a client scenario. Pension cannot be access until age 55 (57 from 2028). The value of pensions can go down as well as up. This is not personalised financial advice.

Self-employed or a company director? If you're planning to apply for a mortgage, your 2025/26 tax return now matters.

From 1 October, most lenders will want to see your 2025/26 income figures. If you haven't filed your return yet, your application could be delayed or your choice of lenders limited.

The deadline might not be until 31 January, but if you're hoping to buy, move or remortgage soon, ask your accountant to get it done now.

Chris, Suzanne and Emily help self-employed clients and directors across Reigate and the South East every day. Book your free initial consultation.

The mortgage rate on this morning's headlines? Most people never actually get offered it.

Here's what really decides yours.

The Bank of England base rate sets the general direction, but the rate you're offered comes down to your deposit size, your credit history, your income and how a specific lender assesses affordability on the day you apply. Two applicants with the same income can be offered very different deals depending on their circumstances.

That's why "rates are coming down" isn't the same as "your rate is coming down." The headline is a starting point for the conversation, not the answer to it.

if you've been waiting for a magic number before you start looking, that number was never going to be the full story anyway.

nheritance tax has become one of the most talked-about topics in financial planning, and it’s easy to understand why. With property values rising and thresholds frozen for years, more families than ever are finding themselves within reach of a tax bill they never expected.

A lot of the confusion comes down to myths that get repeated so often they start to sound like fact. Here are five of the most common ones, and what’s true.

It was a fairly active weekend for Resolve's Directors Stuart and Chris as they took on the Windsor Half Marathon!

Why? To help kick off Chris' training for the London Marathon next April in support of St Catherine's Hospice, Crawley.

"The hospice plays such an important role for those facing end of life and their families across Surrey and Sussex, that continuing to raise funds for them is the least we can do with Chris' next challenge being London next year " said a rather tired Stuart at the finish line.

Well done and good luck from all of the team!

If you're self-employed and you couldn't work for three months starting tomorrow, what would actually happen?

No sick pay kicks in automatically. No employer keeps paying you while you recover. No death in service benefit sits quietly in the background. For employed people, some of this exists whether they've thought about it or not. For self-employed people, none of it does unless they've put it in place themselves.

Income protection is built exactly for this gap, typically replacing 50 to 70 percent of your income if illness or injury stops you working.

It's not about assuming the worst. It's about the fact that, unlike an employee, nobody else is going to catch this for you by default.

If you've built a business that depends entirely on you showing up, it's worth thirty minutes to check what happens if, for a while, you can't.
