Did you know a new charity can start receiving donations and covering set-up costs well before its Charity Commission registration comes through?

So what happens to that early income and those first invoices if proper books haven't been started from the outset?

It's a stage many founding trustees overlook, focusing on the mission first and treating record-keeping as something to sort out later. Yet those early transactions, from initial donations to venue hire or website costs, still need to be recorded accurately and attributed to the right funds from day one.

Without that early groundwork, charities can face messy catch-up bookkeeping, unclear opening balances, and awkward gaps when it comes to preparing that first set of accounts.

AE Accountax supports new charities with getting financial systems set up properly from the start, so growth doesn't come with a backlog of untidy records.

If you're setting up a charity, it might help to talk through the bookkeeping basics early on.

This week at AE Accountax💡

In a bid to modernise its services, Companies House is embracing a new login process. From December, objections to a company being struck off must be lodged via the ‘Make an objection’ online platform, leaving email submissions behind. New users will need a GOV.UK One Login, while existing users can retain their old credentials—but will have to transition soon. With each account tied to one individual, businesses with shared logins will need to adapt. Will this shift improve accessibility or complicate matters for some? 🤔

“I’ll just stop my Child Benefit if I earn over £60k – job done.”

Not quite. If you or your partner get Child Benefit and either of you has adjusted net income above the threshold, you may face the High Income Child Benefit Charge, even if the child is not yours. Ignore it and you risk unexpected tax bills and penalties.

AE Accountax can:
- Check if the charge applies
- Estimate what you’ll pay
- Advise on opting out or restarting
- Set up PAYE or Self Assessment correctly

Message us to talk it through.

Charities occasionally miss out on VAT reliefs they're entitled to, simply because they assumed VAT rules didn't apply to them at all.

It's a common misconception that charitable status means VAT isn't something to think about. In reality, charities can be liable for VAT on certain income, while also qualifying for specific reliefs and zero rating on things like advertising or building work, depending on the activity involved.

Without clear records showing which income and costs relate to which activities, charities can end up overpaying VAT or missing reliefs they were entitled to claim.

AE Accountax helps charities keep VAT treatment clear and well documented, so reporting reflects the reliefs and rules that genuinely apply.

Worth a conversation if VAT has always felt like a grey area for your charity.

This week at AE Accountax💡

As the leaves begin to fall, Ofgem has announced a 4% rise in the energy price cap for the final quarter of 2026, fuelled by soaring wholesale gas prices tied to the turmoil in the Middle East. This change impacts 22 million households, ensuring they’re shielded from exorbitant price hikes, despite the ongoing energy market volatility. Meanwhile, businesses watch closely, knowing rising costs may soon reach their doorsteps too. Are we prepared for the long-term effects of fluctuating energy prices? 💡 What do you think?

“Do I really need to worry about Capital Gains Tax if I’ve just sold something at a profit?”

CGT is a tax on the gain when you dispose of assets like property (that isn’t your main home), shares, crypto or valuable possessions. With a £3,000 annual allowance and different rates depending on your income, it’s easy to misjudge what you owe. That can mean surprise tax bills, missed reliefs, or penalties for late reporting.

AE Accountax can help you:
- Work out your gains, losses and allowance
- Check what’s actually taxable
- Plan sales to keep tax down
- Report correctly and on time

A treasurer sits with three donation platform reports, a stack of gift aid records and a bank statement that doesn't quite match any of them. It's a familiar Friday evening for a lot of small charities.

Gift aid claims, online giving platforms and standing order donations often land in different formats and different timeframes, which makes reconciling income against what HMRC and the Charity Commission expect a genuinely fiddly task.

When these don't line up, gift aid claims can be delayed or queried, and annual returns can end up built on estimates rather than confirmed figures.

AE Accountax works with charities to bring donation records, gift aid tracking and bank reconciliation into one clear, consistent process, so reporting reflects what's actually happened.

If Friday evenings like that sound familiar, it might be worth a conversation about how we could help.

This week at AE Accountax💡

In the bustling landscape of the UK jobs market, fresh signs of strain have emerged. The latest figures reveal that job vacancies dipped to 707,000, marking the lowest count outside the pandemic since 2014. Small firms are hesitating to hire, burdened by rising costs. While unemployment holds steady at 4.9%, earning growth shows stark contrasts—public sector pay rises, while private sector gains lag behind. Are we facing a transient slump or a deeper shift in the job market? 💼 What do you think?

Ignore it and you risk errors, penalties and a last‑minute scramble.

AE Accountax can help you:
- Check if the rules apply to you
- Choose and set up the right software
- Keep digital records correctly
- Handle quarterly and year‑end submissions
