Are you ready for the Self Assessment deadlines?

Understanding the distinction between paper and online tax return deadlines is crucial. Here's what you need to know:

- Paper Returns: Due by 11:59pm on 31 October 2026. Filing early allows time for delivery and to keep proof of posting.

- Online Returns: Due by 31 January 2027. Use October to gather any missing records and address questions.

Special circumstances may have different rules, so always verify your specific deadlines.

🔍 Tip: Completing your return early gives you more time to plan for your January payment.

Have questions or need advice? Make sure to check your individual requirements.

Your statutory accounts are more than just a legal requirement; they’re a window into your business’s story! Before filing, take a moment to dive in:

• What figures changed the most since last year?
• Did profit and cash go hand-in-hand?
• Are customers slower to pay?
• Are overheads outpacing sales?
• Does the balance sheet reveal any surprises?

Understanding these shifts is crucial. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about the narrative they tell.

Make some time to review these insights before planning for next year. 🗓️

October is a useful point for business owners to check where the year is actually heading.

Start with three figures:
• Gross margin: are rising costs reducing what is left from each sale?
• Debtor days: are customers taking longer to pay?
• Overheads: have regular costs increased faster than expected?

None of these figures should be viewed alone. A change may have a perfectly sensible explanation. Looking at them together, however, can reveal pressure before it reaches the year-end accounts.

Regular management accounts help turn those movements into useful business questions while there is still time to respond.

If your current figures are difficult to interpret, speak to our Redditch accountancy team about management accounts.

April 2029 might feel a long way off, but a significant change is coming to the way many UK businesses invoice one another.

The Government has confirmed that VAT invoices for business-to-business and business-to-government transactions will need to be issued and received electronically from April 2029.

For businesses, this will mean a PDF invoice, even one that's emailed, which currently counts as electronic, won't meet the new standard. The detailed standards and technical requirements are still being developed, with further guidance due before implementation.

So our message is that there’s no need for businesses to panic or make major changes today. But if you’re reviewing accounting software or finance systems over the next couple of years, e-invoicing is now something worth having on your radar.

We’ll continue to follow the details as they develop and keep our clients updated.

Have you completed your Self Assessment and wondered why the amount due looks much higher than expected? It may be because of payments on account.

Payments on account are advance payments towards your next Self Assessment bill. They’re normally made in two instalments, due on 31 January and 31 July.

If it’s your first year making them, January can come as a surprise because you may have your tax bill for the year just finished plus the first payment towards the following year’s bill. This catches quite a few people out.

If your income is genuinely expected to fall, it may be possible to ask HMRC to reduce the payments.
But they shouldn’t simply be reduced to make the immediate bill easier to pay; if they’re reduced too far, interest can become payable.

Is your business ready for the Autumn Budget on October 28th?

While speculation is inevitable, it's important not to let it stall your decisions. Plan with the numbers you have now, not the rumours.

Consider:
- Your cash flow for the next 6 months
- Margins under pressure
- Upcoming tax liabilities
- Current business performance

If changes arise post-Budget, will you be ready to adapt? Good planning means knowing your business well enough to pivot when needed.
