π©ΊπΌ Company Directors: Are you overpaying for insurance?
If youβre paying for life insurance or private medical cover personally, you could be missing out on significant tax savings through your company.
At Berkshire Accountants Ltd, we help directors structure cover in a more tax-efficient way for 2026/27.
Hereβs a simple breakdown π
1οΈβ£ Private Medical Insurance (PMI) π©Ί
β Fast access to private healthcare
β Can be paid by your company
β οΈ Tax treatment:
Treated as a Benefit in Kind
You pay personal income tax
Company pays 15% Employer NIC
π‘ Still useful because:
Itβs a deductible business expense
Corporation tax relief available
Often cheaper than paying personally
2οΈβ£ Relevant Life Insurance (RLI) π‘οΈ
β Life cover for directors/employees via company
π‘ Key advantage:
NOT a Benefit in Kind
β
Tax benefits:
No Income Tax
No Employee NIC
No Employer NIC
Corporation Tax relief available
π In many cases, this can be significantly more tax-efficient than personal life insurance
π Bottom line
PMI = health benefit with some tax cost
RLI = highly tax-efficient life cover option
Many directors are unknowingly paying more than they need to.
