The chancellor has announced a 10p increase in the 45p mileage rate, backdated to take effect from 6 April.

Also announced was a cut in VAT rates for certain children’s attractions and meals in restaurants from 20% to 5% for the school summer holidays.

From 1 April HMRC will introduce increased penalties for late corporation tax returns, full details can be seen below. In short the late filing penalties will double from the current levels.

As we approach the end of the tax year it worth remembering so key allowances, such as pension contributions and charitable donations. The timing of these items can be key in reducing your tax, either in general or by being used to keep you just within a certain tax banding.

The tax year end is three and half weeks away so there is not much time to plan!

Pay your Self Assessment tax bill 28/01/2026

Remember that (if applicable) balancing payments for the 2024/25 tax year and the first payment on account for the 2025/26 year are due by 31 January.

Details of how to make payment can be found via this link https://www.gov.uk/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill/bank-details and the reference number to use when making payment is your personal UTR number followed by the letter 'K'.

Any amounts unpaid will begin to accrue interest after this date.
