Are you living the dream on social media, but telling HMRC youโre making a loss? ๐
do your luxury cars or holidays on Insta match your declared income? ๐๏ธ
Living on caviar but telling HMRC you can only afford Aldi UK fish fingers every day? ๐ฐ
Beware of an HMRC Lifestyle Audit ๐
Many businesses set up social media accounts to advertise their services, and HMRC can access those accounts to obtain information about their business activities ๐ด
They can also use social media to gather information about assets and lifestyles of individuals when checking the tax position of an individual ๐
HMRC also receive information from your bank, any of your employers, overseas authorities and many other third parties, making it easier than ever for them to identify potential discrepancies before deciding whether a tax audit is required.
You can avoid this by hiring a qualified professional to handle your self assessment tax returns, navigate the Making Tax Digital new regulations and ensure youโre fully compliant.
Or you can keep on living the dream and hope they donโt see your Instagram ๐บ๏ธ

Employing young people? Make sure you're up to speed on the rules.
Children and young workers have additional legal protections to safeguard their health, wellbeing and education. That means employers need to pay close attention to age-related rules on pay, working hours, rest breaks and the type of work that can be carried out.
Key points:
โ
Children (generally aged 13-16 and below school leaving age) can only undertake "light work" and are subject to strict limits on hours and duties.
โ
Young workers (aged 16-17 and over compulsory school age) are entitled to the Young Worker National Minimum Wage and enhanced rest break protections.
โ
Employers may need local authority permits when employing children, depending on local bylaws.
โ
As young people reach key birthday milestones, their legal entitlements and permitted working hours can change.
Looking ahead, the Childrenโs Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 will introduce further reforms in England, including changes to working hours, Sunday working restrictions and a new requirement for child employment permits.
Regulations are still needed before the changes take effect, but employers should start reviewing their processes now.

Did you notice this update from HMRC? I donโt think many of you did hear about this so thought it would be useful to post a gentle reminder ๐
From the 2026โ27 tax year, the approved mileage rate for cars and van has increased to 55p per mile.
This is great, Iโm always moaning how it hasnโt changed since 2011 ๐๐ซฃ Sorry motorcycles and bicyclesโฆ youโll have to sit this one out as no changes for you this time but weโll take this as a small win ๐
As always, please make sure you keep a record of your business journeys to support your claims, always have the evidence to show in case youโre asked ๐
