You do your best work when you’re in a good headspace.

Not when you’re stressed, reacting to everything or making decisions because everything suddenly feels urgent.

Sometimes the best ideas come when you give your brain a bit of room.

On the drive home.
Looking at the sky.
Watching the sunset.
Sitting in the car until the song finishes.

When you run a business, it’s very easy to feel like you should always be doing something.

Replying.
Planning.
Fixing.
Deciding.
Thinking about the next thing.

Sometimes you just need five minutes where nobody needs anything from you.

You tend to make much better decisions when you’ve had a chance to clear your head.

The numbers matter.
The strategy matters.
Your headspace matters too.

But sometimes stepping away for a minute is exactly what helps you come back better ❤️

Jellycat started in London in 1999.

By 2023, revenue had reached around £200 million.

Then in 2024, revenue jumped again by 66% to £333 million, while profit more than doubled to £139 million 👀

(Source: Financial Times)

That kind of growth doesn’t just happen.

It takes a lot of decisions around pricing, investment, people, stock, cash flow, tax and where the business goes next. The bigger the business gets, the more important those decisions become.

You might not be building the next Jellycat, but the principle is exactly the same.

Growth needs more than increasing sales. You need to know whether that growth is profitable, whether your cash flow can support it, what you can afford to invest and where the numbers are telling you to change direction.

Having the right accountant on your side can make all the difference between simply getting bigger and building a genuinely stronger business.

The inspiration for this one came from James’s daughter Isobelle, who is a big Jellycat fan.

What do cake and accounting have in common? 🎂

Get the measurements wrong, and things can go downhill pretty quickly.

Too much flour, not enough sugar or overbeating the eggs… the smallest mistake can change the end result.

It’s not just about getting the ingredients right, either. There’s a skill to baking. The technique matters just as much as the measurements.

The same goes for your business finances.

An incorrectly recorded expense, a missed invoice or inaccurate figures can have a knock-on effect on your cash flow, tax position and the decisions you make about your business.

We believe accuracy shouldn’t come down to someone simply spotting a mistake.

At GTA, we use accounting software to automate processes, reduce the risk of human error and help identify inconsistencies. We combine that technology with our team’s expertise to make sure your numbers are reliable, understand what they’re telling us and use that information to help you make better business decisions.

Just like baking, it’s about having the right ingredients, the right tools and knowing exactly how to use them.

P.S. A huge thank you to the lovely Libby for keeping us supplied with her wonderful baked goods at Accountex this week. We’re still thinking about that cake! 😂🍰❤️

DJ. Racing car designer. Accountant.

Not quite the obvious career path!

When James was about 11, he entered a national DJ competition and got through, only to be told he was too young to go any further.

Next came automotive design.

His dad had designed racing cars during part of his career, and James loved the idea of following a similar route. The plan was Loughborough University, automotive design and engineering, and presumably a life involving slightly more exciting machinery than a calculator.

Then, at around 16, one conversation at a dinner party changed the direction completely.

His godmother, who ran a successful chain of chemist shops, asked what he was planning to do.

James wasn’t entirely sure.

Her response?

“What we need is an accountant in the family.”

Turns out she might have been onto something.

There was no childhood dream of becoming an accountant and no grand master plan to end up here. Just a few different interests, one conversation and a career that eventually became the right fit.

Sometimes the route into the job you’re meant to be doing isn’t particularly straightforward.

Although we do occasionally wonder what DJ James could have achieved if they’d just let the 11-year-old continue… 🎧

Your accountant spent the weekend colour-coding a spreadsheet?

Cute.

Stephanie was probably at a gig, camping or paddle boarding 🤷‍♀️ We like our accountants to have a little more spice ✨

Meet Stephanie, our newest Assistant Accountant 🫶

Stephanie joined us a few weeks ago and has been supporting the team with bookkeeping, VAT and management accounts.

She’s come in and hit the ground running 🙌 Not only is she brilliant at what she does, but she’s fitted in ridiculously well already, and her weekend plans are definitely making the rest of us question ours.

We’re very glad to have her here.

Good with numbers. Good company. Much more our kind of accountant 👀

Ever wondered what your accountant gets up to on their day off? 😂

Well it appears heading over to the Isle of Wight for a day out… and things got slightly more chaotic than planned.

Who knew climbing into giant inflatable balls and attempting to stay upright on water was so easy, as clearly demonstrates.

A brilliant day, lots of laughs and a very different kind of balancing act ❤️

Safe to say, we’ll stick to balancing the books.

Most business owners don’t need telling how to work hard. They already do that part incredibly well.

They know their trade, their customers and their industry inside out. They make decisions quickly, solve problems constantly and usually find a way to keep things moving no matter what gets thrown at them.

What they don’t always have is a clear view of what the business itself needs from them financially.

Knowing what your business costs to run each day gives you that view.

It gives you a real baseline for your pricing, your sales targets and your margins. It helps you understand whether a new hire is affordable, whether a contract is genuinely worth taking on and whether a busy month is actually a profitable one.

It also makes growth easier to judge. Instead of relying on instinct every time another opportunity comes along, you can look at the numbers and understand what that decision needs to produce before it becomes worthwhile.

This is the kind of number we want our clients to understand because it has a practical use. It means you can say yes to the right opportunities, recognise the ones that don’t stack up and make bigger decisions without wondering whether you’re about to create a problem further down the line. The numbers start supporting the way you run the business, rather than being something you only look at once the decisions have already been made.

So, do you know what your business costs you to run each day?

There’s a strange kind of loneliness that can come with running a business.

You can spend your whole day talking to customers, suppliers, employees and other business owners and still feel like there’s nobody you can really talk to about the business itself.

The difficult customer. The month that wasn’t as good as you expected. The member of staff you’re worried about. The big opportunity you desperately want to say yes to but aren’t completely sure you should. The fact that everyone assumes things are going brilliantly because, from the outside, they probably are.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in very good company. A YouGov survey for the British Business Bank found that 44% of smaller business owners had felt lonely or isolated while running their business. Among microbusiness owners, that rose to 56%.

It makes sense when you think about it. Ultimately, somebody has to make the call.

When you work for someone else, there is usually another person above, beside or around you to sense-check things with. When you own the business, you can have a brilliant team and still find that the decisions nobody else wants to make eventually land with you.

That matters for more than just how you feel. Research involving SME owner-managers has found a relationship between work pressures, occupational loneliness and burnout, while other research into entrepreneurs has found social support can positively affect wellbeing.

So what can you actually do with that information?

Give yourself somewhere to think out loud.

That might be another business owner who understands the responsibility, a mentor, someone in your professional network or an adviser you trust. Not somebody who will simply tell you everything will be fine, but somebody you can put the messy version of the problem in front of and work through it properly.

It also helps to stop carrying every decision around in your head.

Get the numbers in front of you. Write down the options. Work out what has to be true for each one to work. Separate the problem you genuinely need to solve from the ten problems your brain has attached to it while you were driving home.

Sometimes you don’t need somebody to make the decision for you. You just need enough information, perspective and challenge to make the decision feel less lonely.

If running your business has felt a bit lonely recently and you could do with someone to talk things through with, we might be a good fit for you.

We know our way around the accounting side, obviously. But we’re also people you can pick up the phone to, talk through the messy bits with, bounce an idea off or ask, “Am I thinking about this the right way?”

You don’t always need another report or another meeting. Sometimes you just need someone who understands business, understands the numbers and is genuinely on your side.

Running a business will probably always involve making difficult calls.

It doesn’t mean you have to make every one of them entirely on your own.
