Doing your own bookkeeping to save money? You might be missing a trick.

When you’re running a small business, keeping costs down matters and doing your own books can seem like an obvious way to save a few pounds. We get that.

BUT here’s the thing…

A good accountant doesn’t just record what’s coming in and going out.

They understand allowable expenses, tax reliefs, business structures and the opportunities you might not even know exist.

They can spot things you may have overlooked, help you avoid costly mistakes and make sure you’re not paying more tax than you need to.

And that’s before we even get onto the hours you could save by handing over the bookkeeping! Sometimes paying for professional advice can actually save you money in the long run.

So if you’re giving yourself a headache with receipts and spreadsheets, perhaps it’s worth asking whether doing everything yourself is really the cheaper option.

Earn over £30k from self-employment or property?👀

From April 2027, MTD for Income Tax expands to sole traders and landlords with more than £30,000 in qualifying income.

❌ It’s not £30k PROFIT.
✅ It’s your gross qualifying income BEFORE expenses.

Income from self-employment and property can also be combined when working out whether you’re over the threshold.

So if you’re hovering around that £30k mark, now is a very good time to find out where you stand rather than leaving it until April.

Calling in sick looks VERY different depending on where in the world you work. 🤒

In the UK, Statutory Sick Pay can last for up to 28 weeks, but it’s paid at a capped statutory rate.

Head to Germany and employees can generally receive their normal wages for up to six weeks before sickness benefit takes over.

In Australia, full-time employees get 10 days of paid sick/carer’s leave each year, which can roll over if unused.

And the USA? There’s no general federal requirement for employers to provide paid sick leave at all. 😳

Same illness. Four VERY different safety nets.

Foodie treats Penzance Food Festival did not disappoint.. it was such a lovely vibe & we got so lucky with the weather!

Happy Double Birthday to our work bestie s Louise & Nia! 🎉

Laura went on a road trip Wales ➡️ Bath, staying in a doggy hotel of course, lucky pooches.

Our Autumn ad came out in Geddon PZ.. 🍂

Emma saw the legend Jon Bon Jovi in London 🎤🎸

And as always we enjoyed breakfasts, lunches & plenty of treats at our fave local places 🫶🏼

Nia joined The Accounting Equation in July 2023 and you’ll mainly find her working on bookkeeping, Self Assessments, VAT and welcoming new clients to TAE.

But her route to Cornwall has been a little more international than most!

After growing up all over the world and completing her accounting degree, Nia carried on travelling, building her experience working in a bank in New Zealand and bookkeeping for non-profits in Canada, before eventually choosing Cornwall as the place to call home. 💚
