The tax return you send in this winter decides whether Making Tax Digital applies to you from next April.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started in April for sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000. From April 2027 the line drops to £30,000.

HMRC decides who’s in by looking at your 2025/26 tax return, the one due by 31 January. If your self-employment and rental income comes to more than £30,000 before expenses, you’ll need to keep digital records and send HMRC an update every 3 months.

What that means for you:

📱 Your records need to live in software HMRC accepts, so a paper diary won’t do
📆 You’ll send 4 quarterly updates a year, on top of the usual return
💷 It’s your turnover that counts, before any costs come off
⏳ From April 2028 it drops again, to £20,000

If you’re getting close to £30,000, spend the autumn getting your bookkeeping into a proper app. It’s a much easier change to make now than in March. Comment the word READY if this is something you're looking for support with.

If I had until the end of 2026 to get one business's books completely clean, here's what I'd do:

1. Pull every account into one place, no more guessing which app the money's sitting in.

2. Categorise the last 90 days first. The recent stuff is what will change decisions right now.

3. Reconcile against real bank statemenrs. If it doesn't match a statement, it doesn't count yet.

4. Separate personal and business. Even if that means opening a new account today.

5. Check your real bank balance every week. Not a projected number, what's actually in your account right at that moment.

6. Set aside a percentage for tax the second money comes in - not at tax return time!

7. Look at November and December now, while there's still time to do something about them.

If you'd rather just hand it all over, I am currently taking on new clients, DM me the word ACCOUNTS and we can have a chat.

Every January my phone rings with the same call, and nearly all of them could have been sorted with a 10 minute chat in October.

It usually goes something like this. Someone’s had a busy year and hasn’t looked at what they owe until the return is nearly due. The bill lands and there’s nothing put aside for it.

I hate those calls. It’s never because the person has done anything silly. Nobody sat them down early enough to say what to expect.

My advice to every self-employed person I work with is to move a percentage of every payment into a separate savings account the day it arrives. For most basic rate taxpayers, around a quarter of your profit is a sensible starting point.

October is the best time to check where you are. There’s still time to top up that pot before the end of January, and I can tell you roughly what the number will be.

Do you put money aside for tax as you go, or deal with it when the bill comes?

Started working for yourself between April 2025 and April 2026? HMRC needs to hear from you by Monday 5 October.

This one catches people out every autumn. If you went self-employed or started renting out a property during the last tax year, you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October.

Leave it late and you risk a penalty, with a lot less time to get your first return in before 31 January.

First year earners often get a second surprise too. Your first bill can include an advance payment towards the following year, which is why January can cost far more than people expect.

I register new clients for this all the time. It takes me a few minutes, and I’ll give you a rough idea of what you’ll owe so you can start putting money aside now.

If you’re not sure whether this applies to you, DM me the word TAX and we can have a chat.

Hello from Northwich. I’m Tracey, and for 26 years I’ve been the accountant local business owners ring when a letter from HMRC lands on the mat.

I run TH Accountancy Services and I’m a Chartered Accountant (ACA). Most of the people I work with are sole traders and small limited companies from round here, where the owner is also the person doing the books at 10pm on a Sunday.

What they get from me is someone who answers the phone and explains things in plain English because yes, there's so many posh words in accountancy that I shouldn't and wouldn't expect you all to understand. A good part of my week is spent turning a worrying letter into a 5 minute job!

I hear the same few questions over and over, and most of them have simple answers once someone talks you through them.

I’ll be sharing tips in here each week, kept short and written for people who’d rather be running their business than reading about tax.

What does your business do, and which bit of the money side do you put off the longest?

I just want to talk about one of my recent clients - he was so excited as he was finally able to expand his business. He was about to hire his first employee, and had no idea what it would cost him.
He'd worked out the salary for them and that was it. In his head, "I'll pay them £26,000" was the whole sum. And that's completely understandable, nobody's ever taught him the rest.

So we sat down and looked at the real cost of an employee. Employer's National Insurance. Pension contributions under auto-enrolment. Holiday pay. The employer's side of the numbers that never appear in the job advert.

It changed the picture, but not in the way he feared. Because once he could see the true cost, he could also see what he needed the role to bring in to be worth it. And we found he qualified for the Employment Allowance, which took a chunk off his NI bill straight away.

He went ahead and hired, but he did it with his eyes open, and a plan, instead of a hopeful guess.

Hiring your first person is one of the biggest leaps a small business takes. It's exactly the moment to have someone run the numbers with you first! Feel free to message me if you're looking for support with your finances.

All the industries I work with as a chartered accountant with my own business -

setting up just over 12 months ago, I’ve worked with 30+ business owners, including:

👉🏻 Beauty and hair businesses
👉🏻 Tradespeople (including CIS workers)
👉🏻 Equestrian businesses and farmers
👉🏻 Retail businesses
👉🏻 Cafés and hospitality businesses
👉🏻 Property companies
👉🏻 Social media and online business owners

The reality is, no two businesses are the same, but a lot of the challenges around accounts are very similar.

Most people just want to know things are being done properly, without it taking up all their time and energy!

If you’re self-employed or running a business and you’re not sure where you stand with your accounts, comment the word FINANCE, and I’ll get in touch!
