Plenty of people carry on working long after the point they needed to. Not out of caution,
and not because the numbers told them to. Usually because nobody has ever tested the
question properly.
"How will I know when it's enough?" is one of the most important things a client can ask.
It's also one of the most quietly asked.
Part of the reason it's hard to answer is that enough isn't really a figure. It's the relationship between your resources and your lifestyle, between what you've built and how you want to live. Two people with similar wealth can arrive at very different answers.
Fixing on a single milestone doesn't settle it either. Until you know how that figure translates into income, flexibility and resilience, it can still feel uncertain.
Clarity comes from modelling real life rather than rough assumptions.
What does your spending look like on reduced hours? How would market movements affect you in the early years? What if you live longer than you expected, or your priorities change along the way?
Explored properly, those scenarios won't remove every unknown. What they do is replace
vague hope with informed confidence.
And that changes the nature of the decision. Stepping back becomes a choice made from
strength, rather than a leap into the dark.
