Every business needs a certain amount of funds to keep it running smoothly. This amount will fluctuate as the business moves through its operating cycle.

If you have excess cash within your business, here are some examples of what you can do with it;

🔹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 – If you are leaving money in your business, make sure you get some returns for it! Think about having a savings account; this can give you a higher interest rate than a current account.

🔹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – giving charitable donations can make a difference to the causes you choose to support. As a bonus, you may get tax relief on these contributions.

🔹 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 – Use your surplus cash to invest in expanding your business! This can include investing in a bigger capacity in what the company already does or diversifying into something different—for example, taking a course that will allow your business to expand in a new direction.

🔹 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀 –You should consider paying off any business loans. However, do not forget to take into account the interest rate you are being charged and any ‘early-redemption penalties’

🔹 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱 – As the owner of your company, topping up your director’s pension fund will provide long term benefits for you and may be tax-deductible for the business!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘁? 💭

A payment on account is an advanced payment towards your next years tax bill. HMRC requires you to pay 50% of your last year's tax bill on 31st January and another 50% of the 31st July.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁?

🔹 If your tax bill was over £1,000 on your last tax return
🔹 If less than 80% of your income gets taxed through PAYE

𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘆🤰🍼

If you are self-employed and expecting a child in 2024, you may be entitled to 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Sole traders can claim Maternity Allowance, a payment from the government when they take time off from work to have a child.

You can apply to claim maternity allowance 14 weeks before the week your baby is due by completing an MA1 form. This form can be found on the GOV.UK website.

If you’ve paid insufficient Class 2 NI or have been registered as self-employed for less than 27 weeks, you may still be entitled to the reduced rate of maternity pay of £27PW.
