Pension consolidation advice is available. If you hold a Defined Benefit Pension Scheme or Defined Contribution pension with a guaranteed minimum pension or income, any advice you receive will be through a dedicated referral advice service and a specialist within our network.

Two pension statements showing the same value don't necessarily mean the pensions offer the same benefits.
Some older pension arrangements may contain features that aren't immediately obvious.

These could potentially include:
• Guarantees
• Particular retirement options
• Protected benefits
• Different charging structures

That’s why pension transfer decisions should involve more than simply comparing account balances.

Before moving an older pension, make sure you understand exactly what you could be giving up as well as what you might gain.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Having several pensions can mean several statements, logins and investment arrangements to keep track of.

Combining pensions can sometimes make retirement planning easier to understand.
But convenience alone shouldn't determine whether a transfer is appropriate.

Important considerations may include:
• Charges
• Investment choices
• Existing guarantees
• Retirement benefits
• Your wider financial circumstances

Sometimes combining pensions can make sense. Sometimes leaving them where they are can make more sense.

If you've accumulated pensions from several employers, clarity starts with understanding what each one provides.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

When people find an old workplace pension, their first question is often:
“Should I move it?”
A better first question might be:
“What exactly do I already have?”

Before considering a transfer, it can be important to understand:
• Existing charges
• Investment options
• Any guarantees or valuable benefits
• Retirement options
• Whether exit charges apply

Moving a pension can sometimes offer advantages, but transferring isn't automatically better.

Found an old pension? Understand it before deciding what to do with it.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

People often think about retirement as a finish line.
But your circumstances can change considerably before you reach it.

Your plan may need to adapt because of:
• Changes in income
• New financial priorities
• Family circumstances
• Market movements
• Changes to your intended retirement age
• The lifestyle you want later on

That’s why retirement planning is rarely a “set it and forget it” exercise.

Has your retirement plan changed as your life has changed? Regular reviews can help keep the two aligned.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Paying into a pension is only one part of retirement planning.

Another important question is:
Where is the money actually invested?

Depending on the pension, investments may differ in terms of:
• Risk
• Potential return
• Asset allocation
• Geographic exposure
• Investment approach

The right approach can depend on your objectives, circumstances, attitude to risk and how long you have until retirement.

Do you know how your pension is currently invested? If the answer is “not really”, your next statement may be worth a closer look.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

£1,000 today may not buy the same amount in 10, 20 or 30 years.
That’s why inflation matters when planning for retirement.

If prices rise over time, the income needed to maintain the same lifestyle may also increase.
Retirement planning therefore involves more than asking:
“How much money will I have?”

It can also mean asking:
“What might that money actually buy?”

When you picture your retirement income, are you thinking in today's prices or tomorrow's? It’s an important distinction.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Changing jobs, taking a career break or dealing with rising household costs can sometimes mean pension contributions stop.
But what happens to the pension you've already built?

Usually, the existing pension remains invested, although:
• No new contributions may be added
• Charges may continue
• Investment performance will affect its value
• Your retirement projections may change

Stopping contributions doesn’t normally mean the pension disappears, but it may change the path towards your retirement goals.

If you've got an old pension you haven't looked at for years, when was the last time you checked what it’s doing?

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Pension tax relief can sound more complicated than it needs to be.

In simple terms, the Government can effectively contribute towards the cost of saving into a pension through tax relief, subject to the relevant rules and allowances.

The amount and way this happens can depend on factors including:
• Your income
• Your tax position
• The type of pension
• How contributions are made

Understanding tax relief can help explain why pensions are widely used for long-term retirement planning.

Do you know how tax relief works on your own pension contributions? It’s worth understanding.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

The Bank of England has today held the base rate at 3.75%, keeping borrowing costs unchanged for now.

The decision comes against a backdrop of renewed inflationary pressure, with UK inflation currently at 3.1%, above the Bank of England’s 2% target. Energy and fuel costs remain an important factor in the inflation outlook.

Bank Rate can influence the cost of borrowing, including mortgages and other loans, as well as the returns available to savers. However, changes in the base rate do not always feed through immediately or equally to individual products.

The Bank of England’s next scheduled interest rate decision is due in November.

When was the last time you actually read your pension statement?
Rather than filing it away, there are a few useful figures to look for:
• The current value of your pension
• How much is being contributed
• Where your money is invested
• The projected value or income at retirement

These figures aren't guarantees, but they can help you understand whether your retirement planning is moving in the direction you expect.

When your next pension statement arrives, give it five minutes rather than five seconds. Need help understanding what you're looking at? Get in touch.
