Is holiday quietly building up in your business?
Here’s something we have been looking at for one of our payroll clients recently.
Their employees work different hours, which means we also need to keep an eye on the holiday they are accruing.
It might only be a few hours at first, but over time those hours can quickly add up and, before you know it, an employee could have a sizeable amount of holiday accrued.
If they then leave without taking it, accrued statutory holiday that remains untaken will generally need to be paid in their final pay.
That can suddenly become a cost the business wasn’t expecting.
Keeping good holiday records means you always have a clear picture of what has been accrued, what has already been taken and what is still outstanding.
It’s also more important than ever. From 6 April 2026, employers must keep detailed annual leave and holiday pay records for at least six years.
Do you know how much holiday your employees currently have outstanding?

It’s National Payroll Week!
When you see the money arrive in your employees’ bank accounts each month, it can be easy to think that’s payroll done.
There’s actually quite a lot happening behind the scenes.
We recently worked with a business where we needed to look at different hourly rates, overtime, holiday accrued and the hours worked by individual employees.
One small change can affect the final payroll calculation.
That’s why good payroll isn’t simply about paying people.
It’s about making sure the information behind their pay is right too.
This week we’re going to share some of the things we regularly come across when helping businesses with their payroll.
Some of them might surprise you!

What if networking felt more like a good afternoon out?
No 60-second introductions. No standing up and pitching your business. No pressure to say the “right” thing.
On Tuesday 22nd September from 2pm to 4pm, we’re getting together for an afternoon of relaxed networking, friendly chats, tea, coffee and cake.
You’ll also have the chance to ask Elizabeth your accountancy questions in our informal Q&A. There really is no such thing as a stupid question. If you’ve been thinking about it, there’s a good chance someone else has too!
The bar will be open for refreshments and, as we relax into the afternoon, PITbrass will be playing for us before we finish.
We think the best networking happens when people simply chat, laugh and get to know each other.
Come and join us. Spaces need to be booked, so please get in touch to save yours or click the link below. 👇

September always seems to bring that familiar feeling of getting organised again.
The children are heading back to school, new routines are starting and there’s usually a shopping list somewhere with pens, notebooks, folders and all the other bits and pieces they suddenly need!
While you’re picking up stationery for the children, you might also be grabbing a new notebook for client meetings, printer ink for the office or a few pens and folders for work.
The question is, do you remember to keep the receipt?
Those little business purchases can easily be forgotten, especially when they’re mixed in with everything else we’re buying.
Stationery that is genuinely for your business can usually be claimed as a business expense, so keeping the receipt and recording the purchase means you’re not missing expenses simply because you’ve forgotten about them a few months later.
Just remember that the school pencil case and the children’s new pens can’t sneak through as business expenses too!
So, as we get the children organised and ready for a new school year, perhaps September is a good reminder to get our businesses a little more organised too.
Keep the receipt, record the expense and make life a little easier when it’s time to do your accounts.

A conversation really can make all the difference 💚
I know that for many people, finances can feel confusing, overwhelming or simply like something they’d rather put off for another day.
That’s why I’m always happy to have a chat.
Sometimes just being able to talk things through, ask the questions you’ve been worrying about, and understand what your next steps are can take a huge weight off your shoulders.
There’s no pressure and no judgement, just friendly, straightforward help.
If there’s something financial that’s been playing on your mind, please don’t sit worrying about it on your own. Get in touch and let’s have a conversation.

Is it just us or does anyone else get ridiculously excited when the back-to-school stationery appears in the shops?
🟢Colourful notebooks.
🟢New pens.
🟢Colourful highlighters.
🟢A planner that's just waiting to be filled in.
🟢Funky calculators
There really is something satisfying about a brand-new notebook!
As accountants, we probably appreciate stationery a little more than most. There's something about a fresh page that feels full of possibilities.
Please tell us we're not the only ones!
Are you a stationery lover, or do you just buy what you need?

It’s Friday, so we have a very important question…
What do accountants, musicians, freelancers, cake and a brass band have in common?
They’re all going to be in the same room at our networking event!
We wanted to do networking a little differently. Somewhere you can turn up, have a proper conversation, meet other local business owners and ask an accountant those questions you’ve been meaning to ask.
No awkward 60-second pitches. No formal presentations. Just relaxed networking, an open Q&A, tea, coffee and cake.
Then we’re handing things over to PITBrass to finish the afternoon with some brilliant live music.
There are only a few tickets left, so if this sounds like your kind of networking, come and join us.
