HMRC has now started automatically signing some sole traders and landlords up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

From April 2027, MTD will apply if your qualifying income was over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year.

Remember — that’s your income before expenses, not your profit.

If MTD applies to you, you’ll need to:

- Keep digital records using compatible software
- Send quarterly updates to HMRC
- Complete your tax return through the MTD process

If you receive a letter or email from HMRC about MTD, don’t ignore it.

Get in touch with J. Watts Accountancy Services. We can help you get MTD-ready, set up the right software and take care of the quarterly submissions for you.

Don’t wait until the deadline — get prepared now.

💷 VAT REGISTERED? HERE’S A DIFFERENT WAY TO THINK ABOUT YOUR VAT BILL…

Once your business reaches the VAT registration threshold, you’ll usually need to register for VAT and start charging VAT on your taxable sales.

One of the biggest frustrations I hear from business owners is:

“I’ve got another huge VAT bill to pay this quarter!” 😩

But the important thing to remember is — the VAT you collect was never really your money in the first place.

For example, if you charge a customer £120 including VAT, £20 of that is VAT collected for HMRC.

You can then claim back the VAT you’ve paid on eligible business expenses. At the end of the VAT period, you generally pay HMRC the difference between:

➡️ VAT you’ve collected from customers
➖ VAT you’re entitled to reclaim on business expenses
🟰 VAT payable to HMRC

This is why it’s so important to plan ahead when approaching the VAT threshold.

Your pricing may need to be reviewed so that VAT is properly factored in, rather than simply absorbing the additional cost and reducing your profit margin.

And most importantly — don’t treat the VAT you collect as available business cash. Consider putting it aside as you go so that when your quarterly VAT return is due, the bill doesn’t come as a nasty surprise.

📊 Are you getting close to the VAT threshold and wondering what it will actually mean for your business?

Don’t wait until you’ve crossed it to start thinking about your pricing, cash flow and VAT obligations.

J. Watts Accountancy Services can help you prepare BEFORE you hit the threshold, work out how VAT could affect your prices and margins, and make sure you’re ready when the time comes.

📩 Send us a message today to arrange a chat about your business and VAT. A little planning now could save a lot of stress later.

💷 ARE YOU PAYING YOURSELF CORRECTLY?

If you’re a sole trader, the money you take from your business is usually classed as drawings.

Your tax is based on your business profit, not how much you transfer to yourself. So leaving money in the business account doesn’t automatically mean less tax!

If you run a limited company, it’s different.

Money you take could be:

• Salary
• Dividends
• Expense repayments
• Repayment of money you’ve put into the company
• A director’s loan

Dividends shouldn’t just be taken as random withdrawals either – there needs to be enough available profit and they should be recorded correctly.

💡 However you run your business, make sure you understand how you’re paying yourself – not just how much you’re taking out.

📅 31st January will be here before we know it!

If you need to complete a Self Assessment Tax Return, there’s no need to wait until January.

Getting your accounts completed early means:

💷 You’ll know exactly how much tax you need to pay, giving you plenty of time to plan ahead.

📊 You’ll have a clear picture of how your business performed during the last financial year.

🧾 Your income, expenses and important business events are still fresh in your mind – rather than trying to remember everything months later!

And best of all… it’s one less thing hanging over you! 🙌

If your 2025/26 Self Assessment is still on your to-do list, now is a great time to get it sorted.

📩 Get in touch with J. Watts Accountancy Services and get ahead of the January rush.

💡 Is it actually a business expense?

Just because you paid for something from your business bank account doesn’t automatically make it a business expense.

The important question is:

Was this cost genuinely for the business?

Common expenses can include:
• Accountancy fees
• Insurance
• Software & subscriptions
• Advertising
• Business phone costs
• Office supplies
• Business travel
• Equipment

Some expenses, such as meals, clothing, vehicles and working from home, have specific rules. For example, normal everyday clothing usually can’t be claimed, but branded workwear often can.

My advice? Keep the receipt, make a note of the business reason and if you’re unsure – ask! 😊

It’s much easier to get it right from the start than correct it later.

Self Assessment Tax Returns 2025/26

It’s that time of year to start getting your records together for your 2025/26 Self Assessment Tax Return.

Submitting your tax return early means you’ll know exactly how much Income Tax and National Insurance you’ll need to pay, giving you plenty of time to plan ahead.

Don’t worry – the payment deadline doesn’t change. Any tax due is still payable by 31 January 2027.

If you’re ready to get started or need any help, just get in touch!

HMRC have increased the mileage rate for up to 10k miles from 45p to 55p.

Not a huge increase, but a step in the right direction and a welcome change considering rising fuel and running costs 👏
