It's National Payroll Week (7-11 September) — a good excuse to ask: how confident are you in your payroll right now?

A late or incorrect payment doesn't just cost money to fix. It costs trust with your team.

Find Totals runs payroll for clients across the UK: PAYE, NIC, pension auto-enrolment, and RTI submitted on time, every month.

Ask us what that could look like for your business.

Haven't filed? Call us before the end of the day and we'll get it sorted.

Find Totals handles VAT filing for clients every quarter as standard — no scrambling, no surprises. Bookkeeping from £95/month.

VAT was never part of your income in the first place. You charge it on top of your price, hold onto it briefly, then pass it to HMRC.

Your actual revenue is what's left after VAT — same as it always was.

Where people get caught out isn't the VAT itself. It's spending it before the return is due, then scrambling to find the money in September, December, March and June.

Happy August Bank Holiday!

Enjoy the long weekend.

One thing before you switch off completely: if your limited company's financial year ended on 30 November 2025, today is your deadline to file annual accounts with Companies House.

Miss it and the penalty is automatic; there's no warning letter first, and it increases the longer the accounts stay outstanding.

If your year-end doesn't fall in November, this isn't your deadline but it's a good reminder to check when yours is.

Not sure of your filing date? We'll check it for you.

If you started working for yourself or began earning rental income for the first time during 2025/26, this one's for you.

You need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC by 5 October 2026.

That's not the tax return deadline; it's the deadline just to tell HMRC you exist as a taxpayer.

Thing is, you can be penalised if you miss it, even if you eventually file and pay everything correctly.

It takes minutes to register. Getting your records in order for the return itself takes longer — which is why we suggest starting early.

If your business has spent time or money solving a technical problem, building new software, or improving a process this year — you may be entitled to R&D Tax Relief, whether or not the project succeeded.

It's one of the most under-claimed reliefs in UK business tax. Many owners assume it's only for labs and tech startups. It isn't.

What typically qualifies:
→ Developing new or improved products or processes
→ Custom software builds
→ Technical trial and error, even on failed projects

We can tell you in one call whether your work qualifies.

Today's the postal deadline for July's PAYE, National Insurance and CIS payments to HMRC.

If you’re paying by cheque, it needs to reach HMRC today.

Paying electronically? You have until 22 August for the funds to clear.

Miss either deadline and HMRC starts charging interest immediately — there's no grace period for a few days late.

If this date keeps catching you out, it might be time to let someone else own it.

Dehydration in older adults doesn’t always look like thirst.

It can resemble confusion, tiredness, or a dizzy spell that gets brushed off as ‘just getting older.’

What out for these signs:
- Confusion or increased sleepiness
- Dark-coloured urine
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Dry mouth, lips or skin

Older adults are more at risk because the body’s sense of thirst naturally weakens with age — so it’s often carers and family who spot it first, not the person themselves.

If something feels off, it’s always worth checking with a GP.

Our care visits build hydration checks into every routine without making a fuss of it.

August is peak holiday season and if you employ staff, that usually means overtime, temporary cover, or simply doing more with less for a few weeks.

It's easy to treat this as a short-term cost. It's actually a cash flow decision.

Before you approve cover or overtime, check:
→ What it does to this month's payroll cost
→ Whether it's already accounted for in your cash flow forecast
→ Whether it needs to come out of this month's or next month's budget

A five-minute check now avoids a surprise in your bank balance later.

Want a clearer view of your cash flow? We can help.
