Paper Self Assessment returns for 2025/26 have to reach HMRC by 31 October. Here is the part almost nobody knows. 💡

If you meant to file on paper and the 31st goes past, you can still avoid a late filing penalty by filing online instead, as long as that is done by 31 January.

But if you post a paper return after 31 October, that penalty is yours. Filing again online before January will not undo it.

So if the paper deadline is going to beat you, the answer is not to post it anyway. The answer is to go online. 📌

This is the single belief that stops people doing their tax return in October, and it is simply not true. 💡

File your 2025/26 return tomorrow and the tax still is not due until 31 January 2027. Nothing leaves your bank a day sooner.

What changes is that you find out the number three months early. Three months to put it aside, three months to spot that a payment on account is coming, three months to do something about it if the figure is a shock.

The alternative is finding out in late January, which is also when everybody else is finding out. ✅

Get the number early. Ring 01270 260600.

For anyone already inside MTD for Income Tax, the quarter to 5 October closed on Monday, and that update has to be submitted by 7 November. 💡

This is the part people have not adjusted to yet. It is not one return once a year any more. It is four updates in the year plus a final declaration, and the dates do not shift.

The first band in is self employed people and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. The £30,000 band follows in April 2027, which sounds a long way off and is actually two filing seasons.

The ones finding it painless are the ones who got their records in order before they were made to. 📌

If your VAT quarter ended on 31 August, the return and the payment both need to be with HMRC by the end of today. 📅

One calendar month plus seven days after the period ends. No weekend grace, no few days' leeway, and it does not move for anybody.

On direct debit? HMRC collect roughly three working days after the filing deadline, so the return still has to go in on time.

If today has caught you out, set the next one now. The quarter to 30 November is due 7 January, which is the worst possible week to be remembering it. ✅

Hand the quarterly VAT over and stop counting the days. Call 01270 260600.

The quarter closes today, and from here the Self Assessment season is a straight run. 📋

The people who find January easy are not the organised ones. They are the ones who did a small amount of tidying in October instead of a large amount of panicking after Christmas.

Bank statements in one place. Receipts out of the glovebox. Anything unusual this year flagged while you still remember what it was.

That is the whole trick. There isn't a clever bit. ✅

Rather hand the lot over? 01270 260600.

If you began trading, went self employed or started letting out a property during the 2025/26 tax year, HMRC needs to know by 5 October 2026. 📌

It applies if you have never filed a return before, or if you filed previously but did not need to for 2024/25. The trigger for sole traders is gross trading income over £1,000.

Miss it and the penalty is not the usual £100. It is a failure to notify penalty, worked out as a percentage of the tax you owe, which makes it a lot more expensive and a lot more open ended.

Registering takes minutes. Leaving it does not. ✅

Not sure whether it applies to you? Ring 01270 260600.

It is one of the most persistent myths in small business payroll, and it catches employers out every September. 💡

There is no special student form and no student exemption. The old P38(S) was scrapped back in 2013.

A student working over the summer or through term goes onto normal RTI payroll, with the same tax code rules as any other employee. Whether they actually pay tax depends on their earnings, not their status.

Same goes for the harvest casual who did six weeks and has gone back to university. They still need a P45. ✅

Companies House now requires identity verification for directors and people with significant control. It is not optional and it is not a formality. 🔎

The transition period runs out on 18 November 2026. Most directors will be asked to verify when their company files its next confirmation statement inside that window.

Leave it and you are looking at a company that cannot file properly, and an offence on the statute book for not complying.

It takes minutes to do and it is the sort of thing that quietly derails a filing deadline if nobody has mentioned it. 📌

This trips people up every year, and next week is exactly when it bites. 💷

For a 31 December year end, your accounts are due at Companies House on 30 September. Your corporation tax is due the very next day, 1 October.

Payment comes first in the calendar and filing comes second: tax is due nine months and one day after the year end, the CT600 return not until twelve months after.

So the money needs to be there before the return is even filed. If nobody has worked out the number in advance, that is a nasty week. ⏰

Know the figure before the date arrives. 01270 260600.

Limited company accounts are due at Companies House nine months after the year end. For a 31 December 2025 year end, that is 30 September. 📅

The penalties are automatic and they are not small. £150 if you are up to a month late, £375 up to three months, £750 up to six, £1,500 beyond that.

File late two years running and every one of those doubles.

There is no discretion in it and appeals rarely succeed. It is one of the few deadlines where being a day late costs real money for no reason at all. ⏰
