❓ Do you need to do a Self Assessment tax return?

I get asked this all the time — and the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

It depends on how you earn your income, and whether HMRC expects you to report it.

I’ve broken it down in this carousel in a simple, no-jargon way so you can quickly see if it might apply to you.

And if you’re still unsure — I’ve got you. Link in bio 👆

💡 Myth buster

“Cash in hand doesn’t need declaring.”

Fact: All income must be declared to HMRC — regardless of how it’s paid (cash, bank transfer, card, etc).

The only exception is if your total trading income is under the £1,000 trading allowance in a tax year.

Once you go over that threshold, everything needs to be declared.

If you’re earning it, it counts.

Not sure what applies to you? That’s exactly what I help with — link in bio 👆

Set up a separate bank account for your business — even as a sole trader or landlord.

It makes your bookkeeping quicker, your expenses clearer, and your tax return far less painful.

Most banks offer free business accounts, so it’s an easy win.

Honestly, it’s one of the best things you can do for your finances this week.

Did you know you can claim £6 a week for working from home — without keeping a single receipt?

If you work from home regularly, HMRC allows a flat £6 per week (£312 a year) to cover your extra costs. No receipts needed.

It’s one of the simplest expenses to claim… and one of the most overlooked.

If you’re not claiming it, you could be leaving money on the table.

⚠️ Like all tax rules, there are conditions. This only applies to sole traders, and you must meet HMRC’s rules around regularly working from home and the hours you spend doing so each month.

Let’s talk about MTD 👇

Making Tax Digital isn’t here to make tax more difficult… it’s here to bring your business finances into the modern world.

For sole traders and landlords, it means:

✔️ Staying in touch with your numbers
✔️ Keeping records little and often
✔️ No more January panic trying to pull everything together

It’s a shift from “once-a-year stress” to “year-round control” — and honestly, that’s a good thing when you get set up the right way.

I know it can feel overwhelming though…

That’s exactly why I’ve put together a free, simple guide that walks you through:

• What MTD actually is (in plain English!)
• When you’ll need to comply
• How to choose the right software
• What you need to do (and when)
• Where to find support if you get stuck

No jargon. No scare tactics. Just clear, helpful guidance.

You didn’t start your business to do bookkeeping.

You started it because you’re good at what you do.
Because you wanted freedom. More money. More flexibility.

Not because you were excited about spreadsheets, receipts, and HMRC deadlines.

But somewhere along the way… the numbers started piling up.

It starts small.

A receipt here.
An invoice there.

Then before you know it, you’ve got a drawer… a bag… or that pile you keep meaning to sort.

And in the background?

That little voice:

“I really should do my bookkeeping…”

Here’s the truth…

It’s not that you can’t do it.
It’s that you don’t have the time, headspace, or energy to keep on top of it consistently.

And that’s where I come in.

I take the paperwork, the chasing, the “I’ll do it later” stress… off your plate.

So you can:

✔ Know your numbers
✔ Stay on top of tax
✔ Stop that constant background worry
✔ Get back to doing what you actually enjoy

No judgement. No overwhelm. Just calm, consistent support.

If your bookkeeping is sitting in that pile right now…
it might be time to hand it over.

📩 Drop me a message if you want to feel back in control again.

Really good to spend today at an (Federation of Small Businesses) Connect event in

Some really useful takeaways, especially on employment law changes and a presentation on difficult advice in business — genuinely practical stuff that every business owner needs to stay on top of.

One of the best parts of the day was learning about the NatWest Accelerator Hub — a free resource right in the centre of Milton Keynes.

If you’re a local business owner, it’s well worth knowing about. You can use it for meetings, co-working, and events, and they also run drop-in support sessions, which is a great bonus if you’re trying to stay on top of your bookkeeping.

A proper “hidden gem” for the local business community.

And yes… I even managed to record a little video today — progress!

Always good to invest time in things that help you learn, connect, and stay ahead.
