The first Making Tax Digital deadline has passed, and HMRC is now taking the next step.
436,000 taxpayers submitted their first quarterly update by the 7th August deadline, with more than 570,000 signed up for MTD for Income Tax by 12th August.
That’s against HMRC’s previous estimate that around 864,000 taxpayers would need to join from April 2026.
HMRC have begun signing up taxpayers it believes should be using MTD for Income Tax but haven’t yet registered.
If you’re a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income above £50,000, MTD for Income Tax is now a legal requirement unless an exemption applies.
And, that’s not all, the threshold reduces to £30,000 from April 2027, so if you weren’t mandated in 2026, but will be in 2027, now is the time to prepare.
If you haven’t registered yet, or you receive a letter from HMRC, don’t leave it until the next deadline.
Our latest update covers what you need to know and what to do next.
