How long do you legally need to keep your business records?

Most business owners get this wrong.

If you’re self-employed, HMRC generally requires you to keep your records for at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline for the relevant tax year.

If you run a limited company, company records should generally be kept for at least 6 years from the end of the accounting period.

That includes things like:
✅ Bank statements
✅ Sales and purchase invoices
✅ Receipts
✅ Payroll records
✅ VAT records (if you’re VAT registered)
