First time the AIS has been called into action!

About 11pm last night... Tom had been asleep for about an hour. He called up the ship.

"What type of vessel are you and what is your current speed?"

A voice with an eastern European accent crackled throguh the radio; it was a cargo ship doing 12knots.

"Don't worry BeHatty, I can see you on my screen. I will turn a little to starboard for you. And Happy New Year!!"

You might have noticed the massive moon on these recent crisp clear nights.. Tom is seeing that same bright moon and it's lighting up the sea beautifully, making some incredible and enjoyable night rowing!

Three weeks alone at sea! 🌊 Tom has had a tough week with not a lot of wind or wave assistance, but when you zoom out on the map you can really see how much progress he's made in the last three weeks! Weather conditions are picking up again in a favourable direction, so he's hoping to get some bigger miles in this week.

Today, Tom's been fighting beam wind and beam seas 🌊 this is where the wind is coming from across the boat - perpendicular to the direction he wants to be going - which makes for rough conditions and a lot of bruises from oars that get slammed by waves!

Another massive milestone... 1000 nautical miles rowed! When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and Tom has been ploughing away at those miles on his way to Antigua. Conditions are currently more mentally gruelling than they are physically, although spending 15 hours a day on the oars with barely 6h sleep a night is monumentally taxing on his body.

Happy new year! Calm conditions are getting frustrating; Tom is rowing hard - giving all his effort - for 16 hours a day, yet not having anything back from the ocean and not seeming to be gaining the reward he deserved for his efforts. That said, he's far from quitting!

The clouds have cleared overnight so he's had the moon to light up the sea and sky which has made a huge difference to the night rowing experience.

Final day of rowing for Tom in 2025... he'll be starting 2026 just the same 😏😅 wind is almost zero which makes the effort on the oars immense - something like rowing in treacle. But every stroke is one stroke closer to Antigua!

Musing over the isolation that the lonely days on the Atlantic bring.. Tom has about 12 hours of daylight where it feels like he's the only person in the world - out on the ocean, doing his thing, rowing all day. When it sets, he's still rowing, but he says he's conscious that the sun is lighting up the day for everyone going about their normal daily lives. He's getting about 6 hours of sleep at night, plus the odd nap during the day if he needs it.

Tom is back with his video updates! As he explains here, two weeks of exhaustion and perhaps a little complacency is starting to affect him. He is still on track and doing really well, rowing hard without any wind assistance - the sea is relatively calm (Although can change very quickly, as he says!) but actually a cal sea is more of a slog.

Two full weeks at sea complete! Tom has rowed a mammoth 859 nautical miles, but there are still 1800 ahead of him! He's settled into a routine now, but the conditions are challenging - not in the way of last week where the seas were huge, but hard because there is little wind meaning all the forward power must come from him. Celebrating Christmas alone was tough, although safe to say a once in a lifetime experience out there. Sleep deprivation is setting in too, but he's ploughing on into week 3 in 5th place in the solo fleet!

It's nearly two full weeks since Tom left the safety and familiarity of La Gomera to spend 3000 miles alone on the Atlantic Ocean. He is closer to humans in the International Space Station than humans on land!

While you've been enjoying all your Christmas festivities, Tom has been out there rowing. When you get up tomorrow morning, he'll still be out on the Atlantic, alone on his boat, Be Hatty. And when you go back to work, he'll still be rowing. Eat, sleep, row, boat maintenance, cleaning, more rowing. Repeat!
