TAX TIP TUESDAY
VAT registration isn’t based on your financial year.
HMRC looks at your rolling 12-month turnover — and once it passes £90,000, registration becomes mandatory.
A simple monthly check keeps you in control.

If you use your personal car for business, don’t forget to claim your mileage! 🚗
HMRC allows:
👉 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles
👉 25p per mile after that
This covers fuel, insurance, and wear and tear — so no need to track separate costs.
Keep a simple log (apps like MileIQ are great) with date, destination, and purpose. Even 50 miles a week could mean £1,000+ in tax-free claims a year.
Don’t leave money on the road — track your miles!

Do you work from home — even part of the time? 🏡
Then you can claim part of your home costs as a business expense!
That includes:
💡 Electricity, gas, internet
📞 Mobile or landline bills
🪑 Rent or mortgage interest
There are a few ways to calculate this depending on how much space and time you use for work. The key is to keep it reasonable and consistent.
💡 Example: If you work from home 3 days a week, you can claim around 20–30% of certain costs.
👉 Tip: Keep a simple note of your working hours and area used — it’ll make your tax return much easier.

If you’re a director of your own limited company, how you pay yourself can make a big difference to how much tax you pay. 💰
A common setup is a mix of small salary + dividends. This can help you:
✅ Stay within tax-free allowances
✅ Pay less National Insurance
✅ Take home more of what you earn
The exact balance depends on your business profits and personal situation — so it’s worth reviewing each year.
💬 If you’re not sure whether your setup is tax-efficient, it’s a good time to review it before the new tax year starts.

Every small cost in your business matters — and those “small” things can really add up over the year! ☕💻
Things like software subscriptions, parking, and office supplies are all valid business expenses if they’re used for work.
The key is to keep good records. Use mobile apps to snap receipts on the go — no more digging through bags or boxes at the year-end!
📦 Every £10 receipt you forget to claim is £10 of profit you’ll still pay tax on. Multiply that by 100 receipts... and you can see how much you’re giving away!
👉 Stay organised, and your future self (and your accountant 😉) will thank you.
