Owning rental property used to feel fairly straightforward, but over time, itâs become something that needs a lot more attention behind the scenes than people expect at the start.
It isnât just about collecting rent and covering costs anymore, thereâs tax to think about, what counts as an allowable expense, how everything is recorded, and making sure it all lines up properly when it comes to reporting to HMRC... đŹ
Bookkeeping is a big part of that, because itâs what holds everything together, rather than trying to patch everything at the end of the year or relying on spreadsheets that have grown way too complicated over time.
For a lot of landlords, it reaches a point where it stops feeling manageable and starts taking more time than it should, and thatâs usually when they realise itâs worth having proper support in place đđť

Thereâs a point in every growing business where doing everything yourself stops being efficient â especially your finances.
If bookkeeping is always slipping, causing stress, or slowing down decisions, itâs usually not a discipline issue⌠itâs a capacity issue.
And thatâs exactly where the right support makes the difference.
At Hill Bookkeepers, we help business owners move from reactive bookkeeping to clear, consistent financial systems that actually support growth.

There have been some changes to inheritance tax rules this tax year that affect business owners (and farmers!), particularly when it comes to passing assets on to family.
The headline is that thereâs now a limit on how much can be passed on with full relief, and anything above that doesnât get the same level of protection as it used to.
Married couples and civil partners can still combine allowances, which means theyâre often able to pass on a much larger amount before inheritance tax becomes an issue, whereas single people, divorcees, or unmarried couples donât have that same flexibility.
For most people, this isnât something that needs an immediate decision, but it does highlight how important it is to understand how things are structured and what the long-term plan looks like, rather than leaving it until much later.

We often wonder why bookkeeping gets treated as something that just needs to be done in the background rather than something that actually supports the day-to-day running of a business... đ¤
When itâs done properly, bookkeeping gives you a clear view of whatâs coming in, whatâs going out, and whether things are moving in the right direction, which makes decisions a lot easier and takes away a lot of the guesswork.
It also means you catch things sooner, like when something doesnât look right or something needs a second look before it turns into more of a problem. Thatâs where we come in... we keep everything up to date and help you understand whatâs actually going on behind the numbers, so you feel more on top of things day to day đ

Cloud accounting gets mentioned all the time, but itâs basically just your bookkeeping being stored online instead of on one computer or spread across different files.
It means your numbers update as things happen, and you can check them whenever you need to, whether youâre at your desk or quickly looking on your phone.
It also makes working with a bookkeeper or accountant a lot smoother, because everyone is looking at the same information at the same time, so questions get answered quicker and nothing gets held up waiting for documents to be sent over.
Software like Xero does a lot of the heavy lifting, especially with pulling in transactions and keeping everything in one place, but it still needs someone to go through it properly and make sure it all stacks up, otherwise itâs just numbers sitting there without much meaning behind them.
This guide from Xero explains it in more detail if you want to have a proper read: https://www.xero.com/ph/guides/small-business-cloud-accounting/
