What if you overpaid your tax in January?
It happens more often than people think - especially after Self Assessment deadlines, job changes, bonuses, or if your tax code wasn’t quite right.
Good news: if you’ve overpaid, the money is still yours… you just need to claim it.
🔍 How to check:
• Review your Self Assessment calculation (SA302) or PAYE summary
• Look out for a P800 letter from HMRC
• Log into your Personal Tax Account on HMRC
• Check your tax code if you’re employed
🛠️ What you can do next:
• Claim your refund directly through your HMRC online account
• Request the repayment to your bank (fastest option)
• Or ask for a cheque if you prefer
• If something doesn’t look right - speak to an accountant before submitting anything
⏳ How long it takes:
Online repayments are usually quicker (often within a couple of weeks), while cheques can take longer.
✨ Pro tip: Don’t ignore letters from HMRC - sometimes your refund is already waiting, and you just need to confirm your details.
Because overpaying tax is common… but leaving it there is optional 😉

Making Tax Digital is coming 📊
From April 2026, many self-employed people and landlords will need to move to digital bookkeeping and send regular updates to HMRC.
What this means in simple terms:
• Keep your income and expenses in digital software (no spreadsheets or paper records)
• Send quarterly updates to HMRC during the year
• Submit a final year-end declaration to confirm everything
Instead of one big deadline and last-minute stress, your finances will be kept up to date throughout the year.
The good news? With the right support and systems, this change can make tax time much easier and more organised.
We can help you get MTD-ready and stay compliant.

-Employed in the UK – 7 Things You MUST Know in 2026 🚀🇬🇧
Thinking of going self-employed this year or already running your own business? 2026 brings new rules that can impact your tax, income, record-keeping and how you manage your finances.
Here are the 7 essentials every sole trader should know 👇
1️⃣ Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: From 6 April 2026, if your income from self-employment or property is over £50,000 you must use digital records and submit quarterly updates.
2️⃣ Quarterly updates instead of just one annual rush: you’ll need to keep digital records and report income & expenses every 3 months.
3️⃣ Digital record-keeping is mandatory for affected taxpayers — spreadsheets alone may not cut it unless they’re MTD-compatible.
4️⃣ Income thresholds: If your combined income from self-employment + property is over £50k you’re in scope in 2026; over £30k in 2027; over £20k in 2028.
5️⃣ Tax planning & cashflow matter more than ever: With quarterly reporting, the surprises at year-end should reduce — but you’ll still need to budget for tax, NICs, and possible transition costs (software, accountant etc.).
6️⃣ Review whether being a sole trader is still the right structure: With more admin and compliance, for some businesses switching to a limited company may make sense (or consult your advisor).
7️⃣ Stay compliant to avoid penalties: Missing quarterly updates or using incorrect software could trigger new penalty regimes.
Whether you’re a freelancer, beauty therapist, designer, landlord, or running any small business — staying informed is key.
2026 is the year to get organised, stay compliant, and grow smarter.
